About Sabrina

I was born in north China and came to the UK after I completed my uni in Beijing. I went for a Doctorate degree in the UK in African lit. Apart from Chinese and English, I speak some Spanish, Japanese and Somali. I find languages fascinating and I have always been keen to figure out the rules, patterns, interesting points in languages and cultures. I speak standard Mandarin and have very good handwriting (which is important for writing characters). Apart from teaching Mandarin, I am also a freelance English-Chinese translator and researcher. I am an outgoing and friendly tutor with a lot of patience. I will listen to you and always ask you if you have any questions. I will correct you with care and sensitivity. I am always open to feedback.

About the lesson

In my past 8 years of teaching, I always tailor my lessons to the students' needs. I teach all levels. That means, if the student is learning Mandarin for their GCSE/A-LEVEL/HSK exams, I will follow the exam specifications. If the student is an intermediate learner or speaks some Chinese at home, I will figure out their strengths and weaknesses in the first few lessons and make lesson plans to build on their existing knowledge while addressing any gaps in grammar, pronunciation, or vocabulary. I have also taught Chinese for business, trips and journalism. I can teach 45min classes for younger kids and 1h-2h classes for teenagers and adults. Typically we will start our session with 10 min of speaking, talking about your everyday life and reviewing last week's topic, vocab and sentence structure. Then we will spend 20-30 min on a new topic and grammar. In the final 20 min, we will drill some exercises and do some character writing.
