About Rita
As a lecturer in the department of biological sciences at the University of Southern California (USC), I teach a diverse body of students in courses that cover molecular and cellular biology, human anatomy and physiology, and neuroscience and neurobiology. I received my Bachelor's Degree (B.A.) from the University of California at Berkeley in Molecular and Cellular Biology with a Neurobiology emphasis, and my Doctoral Degree (Ph.D.) from USCin Neuroscience. My previous and current research expertise centers around applying cognitive neuroscience and behavioral statistical approaches to understanding reading, and I also conduct educational program evaluations and research centered around improving STEM higher education curricula. I have over seven years of K-12 and higher education teaching experience, and throughout this time, I have cultivated a hands-on, inquiry-based approach that puts students in the "driver's seat" of their learning. I also employ several active learning practices, including frequent poll/ practice questions that encourage students to apply their knowledge in a welcoming environment. I also integrate technology into my regular teaching, and provide students with supplementary materials to guide their out-of-class studying.
