Find your basketball trainer in Kitchener

Basketball rests on seven foundational skills that unlock the rest of the game.

• Dribbling: moving the ball with one hand while staying balanced and aware of the court.
• Passing: moving the ball quickly and safely between players.
• Shooting technique: aligning the elbow, wrist and follow-through for a consistent shot.
• Defence and rebounding: staying low, tracking the ball and boxing out for position.

Working with a coach helps you fix technique early, before habits become hard to change.

Long before dribbling existed, Naismith's rule 1 set the tone for how basketball would be played.

• According to rule 1, the ball could be sent in any direction using one hand or both.
• Since dribbling had not been invented, players relied entirely on passing to advance the ball.
• It encouraged teamwork over individual play, as players could not carry the ball themselves.
• Today's dribbling and travelling rules trace their roots back to this first rule.

Understanding the game's history helps young players see why certain rules exist today.
