Find your basketball trainer in Burlington

Basketball builds on seven core skills that every beginner should know.

• Dribbling and ball handling: controlling the ball while moving without looking down at it.
• Passing and receiving: choosing the right pass, chest, bounce or overhead, for each situation.
• Layups: finishing close to the basket and scoring from mid-range.
• Footwork, pivoting and defence: positioning the body to move, protect the ball and stop opponents.

A personalized lesson lets you focus on the skills you find hardest to master.

Basketball's very first rule dates back to 1891, when Dr. James Naismith wrote out the original thirteen rules of the game.

• Rule 1 states that a player may pass the ball in any direction using one or both hands.
• Without dribbling as an option, this rule made passing the core of the early game.
• The rule pushed players to move and support each other instead of holding onto the ball.
• Modern rules like travelling and dribbling grew directly out of this original idea.

A coach who knows the game's origins can make the rules easier to remember and apply.
