About Will
I was awarded my BA in Ancient History from Royal Holloway, University of London in 2016, for which I was awarded the Andrew Leno Memorial Prize after graduating with the highest overall mark on my degree programme in my year group. I was also awarded the Driver Prize for my overall academic performance in my second year.
My BA gave me a solid grounding in the Latin and Greek languages, as well as various aspects of Greek and Roman history, literature, and archaeology. I then went on to complete an intercollegiate MA in Classics in collaboration with UCL, King’s, and Royal Holloway which focussed primarily on studying Greek and Latin texts in the original language, including Virgil, Cicero, Lysias, and Herodotus. I was awarded an MA fee-waiver scholarship by the Department of Classics.
I received my doctorate in 2023. The thesis, fully funded by the Arts & Humanities Research Council, explores the use of rhetoric and persuasive language in Ancient Greek diplomatic relations, especially with the Romans. Persuasive language (that is to say Rhetoric) a key component of the English Language GCSE and A-Level syllabus, is something I have always been interested in.
I have published on Theresa May's communication strategy while Prime Minister, and I am currently writing the chapter on rhetoric and political communication for the Routledge Handbook to the Conservative Party. I first worked as an Academic Tutor for Royal Holloway, and I am now an Honorary Research Fellow there. I have tutored privately for over three years. In addition to my research and teaching work, I work in communication and research for a small non-partisan policy institute in London focussed on supporting UK small businesses to grow.

To me, every student has individual needs and goals. In our first session, we will establish the level you are at, the level you want to reach, and how we will get there. I firmly believe that students cannot be treated 'en masse'.
In the classroom (and online) I prefer to keep lessons fairly informal. I believe that discussion is hugely important in developing a student's understanding of a subject, and therefore it is vital that students have the confidence to speak and ask questions.
Questions are often more important than answers, and as a teacher, I always encourage students to ask questions. This allows students to formulate their own thoughts and ideas about the subject at hand, and to clarify any potential points of confusion.
My goal is to get the students thinking critically. Coming up with your own thoughts and observations, based on the evidence and existing scholarship, is key to ensuring the highest marks in undergraduate studies.
Recommendations
Recommendations come from relatives, friends and acquaintances of the tutor.
Will is a brilliant, cheerful, encouraging and inspiring tutor who tutored one of my children from zero knowledge of Greek to passing his CE with flying colours as part of his successful Eton application. Can't recommend him highly enough!
Will provided GCSE Latin tutoring for my daughter as she planned to study this at A Level to meet the criteria of her chosen Degree subject but it was not available through her Secondary school. With Will’s excellent knowledge, patience and skill as a tutor she was able to learn the subject to GCSE level from scratch with weekly lessons over the course of 2 years and gain a high grade.
As a parent I found Will communicative and reassuring, he built a good rapport with my daughter which was essential to her effective learning and her passion for the subject continued to thrive with his support.
I would highly recommend Will as a tutor.
