Lesson Title: Understanding Fractions (Basics & Operations)

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, the student will be able to:
• Understand what a fraction is
• Identify numerator & denominator
• Simplify fractions
• Add and subtract fractions with like denominators

Materials Needed:
• Notebook & pencil
• Visual aids (drawn or printed circles/pizza/rectangles divided into parts)
• Optional: real items like a chocolate bar or paper shapes

Part 1: Introduction to Fractions (10 mins)

Start with a simple question:
“If we split a pizza into 4 equal slices and eat 1, how much did we eat?”
• Draw a pizza divided into 4 parts
• Explain: A fraction represents a part of a whole
• Top number = numerator = how many parts you have
• Bottom number = denominator = how many total parts in the whole

Example:
• 1/4 means 1 part out of 4 equal parts

Practice:
• Show visuals and ask: “What fraction is shaded?”

Part 2: Simplifying Fractions (10–15 mins)

Explain:
• Fractions can often be simplified by dividing the top and bottom by the same number

Example:
• 4/8 = 1/2 (divide both by 4)

Quick Tip: Use greatest common factor (GCF)

Practice:
• Simplify: 6/12, 10/15, 8/10

Part 3: Adding & Subtracting Fractions (Same Denominator) (15–20 mins)

Explain:
• When denominators are the same, just add or subtract the numerators

Examples:
• 2/5 + 1/5 = 3/5
• 4/7 - 2/7 = 2/7

Important: Denominator stays the same!

Practice:
• 3/8 + 2/8 = ?
• 5/9 - 3/9 = ?

Challenge: Ask them to simplify if possible.

Part 4: Real-Life Application (5–10 mins)

Ask:
• “If you ate 2/8 of a chocolate bar and your friend ate 3/8, how much did you eat together?”
• “If you cut a sandwich into 4 pieces and eat 3, what fraction did you eat?”

Exit Ticket (Last 5 mins)

Quick 3–4 questions to check understanding:
1. What does the numerator tell us?
2. Simplify 9/12
3. 2/6 + 3/6 = ?
4. What is 5/8 - 1/8?
