About Samuel
I am a composer, guitarist and music theorist with experience working with renowned ensembles and soloists in France, the USA, Australia, Spain, Italy, China and Taiwan. I have bachelor and master's degrees in composition from the renowned Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP) as well as a bachelor degree from the New England Conservatory (NEC) in Boston. I approach music from a creative perspective with the belief that the best way to learn is to engage directly in practice using both intuitive and intellectual methodologies. I have experienced a multitude of teaching methods as both student and teacher over the years in a diverse array of cultures and settings, which has helped me develop flexible teaching strategies suited to all kinds of students based on their individual goals. Finding strategies that inspire students and allow them to thrive at their highest potential is a deeply meaningful process to me as a teacher and I take great pride in getting this right and seeing the results.

Having tutored at the renowned New England Conservatory of Music (NEC) in Boston, I have experience teaching a broad array of subjects ranging from ear training, harmony and contemporary classical music at an advanced academic level. I seek to approach music theory from a holistic and practical perspective that incorporates analysis of scores and recordings, ear training, counterpoint, harmony and composition in a range of styles that can be adapted to the desires and needs of the student. I try to approach music from a universalistic perspective by incorporating my knowledge of Balinese and Javanese Gamelan music, Carnatic music (South Indian Classical) and Chinese music to broaden the creative horizons of my students.
Lessons are an hour long and can take place either at my apartment in Collingwood or online.
My philosophy as a teacher involves focusing on the unique potential and capacities of each individual in order to manifest their musical talent in the best way possible and make the experience fun and engaging for them at every stage of the process.
I am trilingual, speaking English (native), French (fluent) and some Mandarin Chinese (intermediate).
I have a valid working with children check from the 12/05/2023 that can be presented upon request.
