About Julia
I am a lifelong language learner and have learned 5 foreign languages to a conversational level so far, which means I can help you too! In addition to this, I have 8 years of tutoring experience and have 2 degrees, one in Speech and Hearing Science and one in Spanish, with me graduating with my Master's in Bilingual Speech Pathology in December of this year. I love to figure out the way you learn best to teach you and I have experience in speech and language therapy which allows me to conduct sessions in an organized and efficient way.

Methods:
Translation: Using translation in language learning is a useful tool to consider different ways to express concepts and expressions from your native language into your target language.
Comprehensible Input: I will use structures when speaking to you that are slightly beyond your capacity to understand, therefore requiring minimal instruction to grow in the context of natural conversation.
Comprehensible Output: I will encourage you to use language in new ways that are slightly beyond your capacity. This is done by speaking about more specific topics that are less often talked about, asking questions that require the use of more advanced structures and vocabulary, etc.
Color Chart for vowel sounds: This is a useful tool that provides word-level examples for all vowel sounds that provides learners with a name for each sound, allowing the instructor to more easily correct and provide instruction around each of the sounds.
Long and short vowel instruction: This is a strategy used to teach children literacy in English and is helpful to teach non-native speakers of English so they understand the vowels and their letter patterns.
International Phonetic Alphabet for consonant sounds: Each consonant has three features: manner, place, and voicing. I will break these down for you and provide instruction first at the isolation level, then at a syllable level, then word, sentence, and conversational level.
Intonation contour instruction: In every language, our vocal pitch goes up and down depending on the sentence and the meaning you would like to convey. Explicit instruction on when, where, and why we tend to make our voice go up and down as well as instruction on certain “tunes” we use to convey different meanings will be provided.
Stress patterns: Stress occurs at the word level as well as the sentence level in English. This stress also affects how vowels are pronounced and whether we reduce vowels or not to forms that are more easily pronounced. This is why we don’t pronounce words such as “to” in sentences as we produce them alone. This will be practiced at the word level up until the conversational and paragraph level.
Minimal pairs for vowel distinctions: The easiest way to hear a distinction between two similar vowels is to compare two words that are only differentiated by that one sound and practice them alone and in sentences. This practice is supplemented by animated and MRI videos showing the differences between these two sounds.
Introduction to phrasal verbs and idioms: I will try to introduce you to a few idioms and phrasal verbs at the end of sessions, as well as quiz you on idioms and phrasal verbs learned in previous sessions to bolster your English.
Advanced vocabulary instruction: I will introduce you to advanced vocabulary while targeting your pronunciation in the context of flashcards with words and sentences as well as books to your interest.
Games: I enjoy incorporating games that involve description such as Taboo and that involve your language, such as guessing what different idioms mean with and without context.
