About Ivy

I completed my Bachelor of Arts (major in English Language and Literature at the Dalian University of Foreign Languages, a university in China. This experience helped me build up a good foundation in studying English and linguistics. In 2014, as an international student from China, I came to Australia to study Master of Journalism at Monash University and I graduated in 2016. In the past four years, I’ve worked as a Mandarin Chinese teacher at a local Chinese school.

Because of this working experience, I decided to study Master of Teaching (Secondary) at Australian Catholic University in 2017, which is a degree I will complete in July this year. I find pleasure in the process of learning Language’s Curriculum and Methodology. Being a native Chinese can help me translate to the classroom where I provide students with authentic, relevant, interesting, up-to-date culture and language components.

About the lesson

In my past teaching experience, I have demonstrated the ability to teach Chinese Mandarin across years 7 to 12. As a part of planning units of work and lessons, I take into consideration the needs of my students, differentiating based on ability. In my classes, I have supported students with varied backgrounds including first language learners, second language learners, background language learners and students with Individual Learning Plans. I use Gardner’s Multiple Intelligence’s and the Teaching for Effective Learning Framework to guide my planning. I cater for visual, kinaesthetic and aural learners by incorporating rhymes to learn verb conjugations, gestures and pictures to internalise new vocabulary and songs to give a real-life context when learning a new tense.

For Year 11 and 12 students, I had the rich experience in coaching them individually on preparing for oral examinations during the placements. As I have the insight into the VCE Chinese Assessment criteria and expected qualities, I can provide various materials, personalised coaching and timely feedback for students to support them to achieve the outcomes of the units.
