About Deborah

I have been tutoring maths since 2015.

I have not tutored maths this year because I have been on my year abroad (teaching English in a French school) as part of my university course studying French.

From October 2018 - May/June 2019 I tutored two sisters (year 4 and year 7) in maths, and a year 11 boy, studying for his maths GCSE. They all advanced very well. I was patient and helped them to understand the areas they struggled in (in regards for the year 7 and year 11 students), and helped the year 4 student, a gifted student, learn more advanced maths. By the end of the year we had got onto quadratic equations and she was excellent at them. The year 7 student wrote in a card she and her sister gave to me at the end of the year that I was the best tutor she'd ever had (and she's had a lot of them).

In 2015-16, when I was in year 12, I tutored two year 11 students for their maths GCSEs through my school. I worked through the test papers the school provided with them, but also made up my own questions and wrote explanation sheets in the topics that they were struggling most on. They both got Bs, much better than their target grades.

In 2017, I worked for Kumon. I tutored children between 4-16 in maths (and English), covering addition to more complicated algebra. I helped them work through the sheets that they were given, patiently explained things that they did not understand, and tried to ask questions which would allow them to find the right answers by themselves.

This is the experience I have in tutoring maths. All other experience with children/teenagers, and in other jobs can be found on my CV below.

About the lesson

I will give lessons from simple primary school level maths (addition, subtraction, multiplication etc.) to GCSE maths. Though I performed very well in A-Level maths I finished studying it 3 years ago and have not tutored anyone in it.

Firstly I will ask which areas you struggle most in, if you are unsure I will get you to look at a test paper at your level, or make up a series of questions based on the national curriculum to check your level of understanding. After identifying the problem areas, I will find or make up examples of questions on that topic for us to work through together and try to demonstrate how/why the method works, and then give you more questions to try to work through without my help (though I will always help if necessary).
When teaching I never give the answer immediately, I always try to ask lead in questions so that you have the chance to figure out the answer yourself. I think that works best as it makes sure you understand everything. I am a very calm and patient person.
