About Jared

Thanks for considering me as a tutor.
I have a Mechanical Engineering bachelor’s with a minor in math. I earned a PhD in Materials Engineering. My overall GPA for eight years was a 3.9 (so close, yet so far!). I have been tutoring or teaching in some form since my junior year of high school. I don’t want to figure out how long ago that was, but... I’ve been teaching at a university for over 15 years now, taught labs in graduate school, tutored math in college, tutored academically at-risk 8th grade students in math and science, and tutored math in high school. I even filled in teaching math for one of my teachers a few class periods when she was traveling! That is about 25 years.
The story of how I became a teacher is a rather long one but, as the kids say, I can give the TLDR version. I started high school “bad” at math. One teacher took interest in helping me. At the time I was not that excited for the help but within two years, I was a TA for her and helping students overcome what had previously challenged me. While in college my peers consistently encouraged me to consider teaching because I was natural at leading study sessions. Fast-forward over 20 years and that is what I am doing.
I have taught a variety of college courses including differential equations (requires calculus), algebra, materials science, automation, quality control, and others. My teaching evaluations score me extremely high on “respects students” and “listens to student questions.” As a father, I have seen what the current public-school systems are teaching and have tutored my own child.
My tutoring style is visual. I believe students should see all the work steps in sequence. There are also a good number of visual aids I can suggest around the house. For example, a few pieces of paper cut into two circles and a rectangle can be used to demonstrate where the formula for the surface area of a cylinder comes from. I can find aids between sessions.
Please let me know if you have questions. I wish you the best on your journey.

* I was "bad at" math when I started High School so I understand the value in someone who will take the time to explain things to you. I have now successfully taught college-level math in addition to other topics.
* Ideally, I would like to know the exact topic you are seeking tutoring in a few days ahead of time. This gives me time to find some visual examples. (For example, "high school geometry: surface areas and volumes; or undergraduate differential equations: modeling of spring-mass-damper systems with 2nd order ODEs)
* There are lots of good tutors, but I am currently on sabbatical (have free time) and I can cover a lot of different subjects. I have over 20 years of teaching and tutoring experience. I have a son in high school that I work with at home so I am familiar with much of the K-12 math and science work.
