About Noah
I look to the ways that photography became an artistic medium, replacing the role of painting as the primary illusionistic representation of real-life subject matter. The ability to instantly record images directly from life using photographic processes led to technological developments in the realm of popular culture, just as every other aspect of developing cultures around the world were affected by the industrial revolution. Landscape Painting and successive modes of representations of physical spaces are illusions that offer a way of reaffirming the traditional mythicization of a Nature/Culture dichotomy. This technology led to the emergence of fully digital environments that have archived landscapes using real-world assets. I attempt to disrupt assumptions of Nature/Culture by returning the digital images to the analog world. I look for evidence of ruination and erosion in the rectilinear structure of the built environment to expose the landscapes of this development. This accumulates into a collection of artifacts that archive the constant excavation of material involved in supporting the structures of my surroundings, be they physical or digital.

I focus on image production using conventional representation techniques from academic drawing and photographic reproduction. I work with students to decide on reference material to translate into hand-made images with drawing and painting materials. Interested students will gain feedback about technique, but also learn critical theory and conceptual frameworks for developing their art practice. My goal as an educator is to offer an approach to image-making that will foster a sense of self-analysis in the student, regardless of their level of experience.
