  • 1. Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad, an individual or a certain aspect of the culture?

I was born in Guangzhou, China, where the city's rich heritage and culture sparked my interest in languages. As a native Cantonese and Mandarin speaker, I developed a passion for language learning through my journalism studies at university and various interactions. After moving to Australia, I explored Western art and culture while studying graphic design in Sydney. My experience as an Editorial Editor for an Australian Chinese newspaper further refined my Chinese language skills in an Australian context. Understanding both cultures has inspired me to share my knowledge and provide culturally relevant teaching. My interest in culture and communication drives me to continually improve my skills and share them with others.
  • 2. Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

When thinking of an emblematic representative of Chinese culture, Confucius( 孔子/ Kongzi, Master Kong) immediately comes to mind. As a pivotal figure in Chinese history, his teachings and philosophy have profoundly shaped Chinese culture, language, and society. Confucius embodies wisdom, respect for tradition, and the importance of education, which are core aspects of Chinese values. His sayings and ideas continue to be widely quoted and studied, demonstrating his lasting influence on Chinese thought and culture.
  • 3. Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

I like this Chinese idiom: 水滴石穿Shuǐdīshíchuān.(Constant dripping wears away a stone). Meaning that with perseverance and persistence, one will eventually succeed.

This well-known Chinese idiom (shuǐ dī shí zhù), conveys a valuable message about perseverance and persistence leading to success.
  • 4. Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Speaking this language allows me to connect with others, share ideas, and foster understanding across cultural boundaries. It's a key part of building relationships and accessing educational and professional opportunities.
  • 5. What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Reading and writing Chinese characters is a big challenge as Chinese characters are completely different then the Roma letters.

Common challenges include mastering grammar rules, vocabulary, and pronunciation. To overcome these, I recommend a consistent start from PinYin, practice, immersion through media and conversations, and seeking feedback from native speakers or tutors.
  • 6. Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

During my studies in Australia, I had to present a design project, which was daunting as English is my second language. To prepare, I worked with an English teacher and practised with native speaker students. Their feedback and encouragement really helped me improve my presentation skills. I ended up acing the presentation and got a great score on the project. It was a huge confidence booster, and it taught me the value of seeking support and practising in a supportive environment. Now, as a Chinese tutor, I try to create a similar safe space for my students to practise and build their confidence in speaking Chinese.
  • 7. How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

I always travel with my non-Chinese speaking husband around China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. As a teacher and translator, I help him explore and dive into the Chinese culture and history, engage with locals, and these experiences have developed my teaching skills and knowledge of the language. Also enhancing my comprehension and ability to communicate effectively in diverse settings.
