About Douglas
Teaching Experience:
Private Instrumental Music lessons for Guitar, Bass, Mandolin, Ukulele, Banjo, Snare Drum. All styles.
Initially, part-time supplemental income was the achieved goal and includes my time at Turner Music in Lee's Summit, MO (1987-88), then at Steve's Music in Grandview, MO (1993-98) and Picks & Sticks Music Harrisonville, MO (1998-2001). A full-time income from my own teaching practice, East of Adrian Music, was achieved from 1998-2002.
-Taught group lessons for City of Grandview Parks & Rec
Musical Education/Skills/Abilities:
At this moment in time, and at this stage of my life (a very youthful-minded age of 56), I do not possess a college degree in music. My SoHK (School of Hard Knocks) music education is as follows:
-Began formal guitar lessons in 1973 (age 9) in Tulsa, Oklahoma using the "Mel Bay Modern Guitar Method" under the tutelage of guitar instructors Paul Lee initially, followed by Randy Weimer. I successfully completed the seven-book course along with myriad supplemental materials provided by the instructors.
-Although a big fan of Rock Music, my teenage years (roughly 1977-81 or 82) found me studying Jazz Guitar and theory under the guidance of Instructor Rick Gibbons at a long since defunct place called Raytown Music located in Raytown, MO. Mr.Gibbons was a protege of the late & legendary John Elliot, one of the Kansas City areas most revered theory guru and sought after instructors [amongst some of Mr. Elliots's past students were the now highly successful KC area player & teacher Jay Eudaly, drummer/percussionist Scott Allan Robinson (once part of Pat Martino's band, 1996-2007) and even the legendary world-renowned guitar extrordinaire, Pat Metheny back in the early to mid 1970's--all were once students of Mr. John Elliot, as was my teacher, Mr. Rick Gibbons]. As such, my lessons from Gibbons were quite comprehensive, thorough, even gruelling at times (e.g. all chord voicings not only played, but recited, or "spelled" aloud; with every concept or precept done in all 12 major and minor keys using the "cycle of 5ths" as a guide for example; chromaticism; whole-tone and/or diminished sequences to name a few other practice mechanisms for completeness of all key centers--and now we're just "scratching the surface" as it were).
All said, the time spent on such intense and regimented practice measures was well worth the effort and I wouldn't trade it now for anything.
The abilities acquired from my early musical "education" and on up through my teenage years; that is, the disciplines instilled in me from those efforts, continued to be developed, nurtured and utilized throughout my adulthood up to and including the present day.
