About Francisco

My name is Francisco Attia-Soto and I pride myself in being a Christian, friend, teacher, poet and lover of life. My pedagogy is defined by two adages: knowledge is power and love is the best medicine. Having been both deprived and exposed to knowledge at various points in my life, I am keenly aware of the advantage intellectual capital holds in an ever-evolving world. The same is true with love. I can’t see teaching without love. The patience, kindness, cheerfulness, selflessness, the ability to not take anything personal and the ability to always believe in the students is indispensable to being a good teacher, at least in my opinion. For me, knowledge is knowing how to understand and relate to the world around us, it is knowing that every person is unique, meriting to be carefully taught and catered to so as to bring their inner-child into a higher realm of understanding of the world. My hope is that in this process students learn to understand themselves and take initiative in their own story. Every student deserves the space and attentive efforts put in place to allow for appropriate growth in all levels and for knowledge to become their power. Knowledge exceeds numbers and data, it is also knowing how to grasp the intangible, the creative side of the mind and giving it an intentional outlet which can be thoughtfully revisited. I intend on creating a space for students which attempts to achieve such lofty heights.

As I terminate my TAship program at Seton Hall University helping students improve their reading, writing, and critical thinking proficiencies by teaching 1201 and literature in 1202, I have seen the correlation which exists between knowledge, love, and creativity and how they can productively coexist within a teaching environment to guide students to take ownership of their growth and story. I have seen the influence of open discussions, group projects, lectures, challenging texts, thought-provoking materials, workshopping of ideas, students getting to voice their preferences, and the balance in a knowledgeable yet approachable professor on students. I have seen the security this creates, allowing students to feel safe to fail in an environment where knowledge and creativity successfully join hands and give power to students. In my view, being a teacher is nothing more than giving a generation the opportunities to learn which is their right, hoping they will take the opportunities given. Ultimately, your learning and story is in your hands and part of my job is making sure you understand that; all I can do is point towards the way.
