I am currently in my third year of studying a Bachelor of Secondary Education/Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Queensland. Although my majors are French and Psychology, I have a great passion for assisting students in obtaining all of the necessary skills for success in Australian schools. As I am a native English-speaker who has always achieved high marks in her written work, and I eventually would like to use my psychology study to assist in the education of students from a diverse range of linguistic and cultural backgrounds, I feel like this opportunity would be perfect for me!

My approach to teaching is very student-centred - i.e. I spend time assessing students' learning strengths and needs, and then develop a set of learning goals and comprehensive lesson plans. I also observe students' personalities and dispositions towards learning and school authority, and then decide on an appropriate teaching strategy.

For example:
If I am presented with a student with difficult behaviour, I would not use an authoritative teaching style. Use of such a style in this situation may only serve to escalate the student's behaviour, so I would instead adopt a calmer disposition and focus on developing a good relationship with the student. This may lead to a discovery of the underlying issues that lay the foundation for the behaviour - it may be that the student is from a culture where such behaviour is completely normal, or that they have a traumatic home life.

Another example would be if I were working with an English-Language Learner (ELL) student. Instead of giving spoken instructions or relaying content verbally, I would make use of technology and provide students with various visual aids such as diagrams, scaffolds and pictures. Studies have shown that it is easier for ELL students to retain information when visual aids are used. In addition to this, I would adapt my teaching style and vocabulary to suit the student's native culture. This would greatly assist in the student's learning, as it would reduce or eliminate the cultural barrier to education. I would also keep in mind any culturally-relevant vocabulary, and explain the meanings of such words and phrases when they are used. If necessary, I would also provide a list of the most important words/phrases and their meaning.

Furthermore, I would provide sentence frames to help students with academic English. As there is a significant difference between colloquial Australian English and formal academic writing, conversations and informal learning activities with students will not be enough to optimise students' potential for success. In order for this to happen, students must be provided with examples of partially-completed sentences, and then asked to fill in the blanks.
