About Woodrow

In my day job, I am an officer in the U.S. Navy. In this role, I am humbled to get to lead and teach others on a daily basis. Applying these skills to the online learning environment will be new for me, but I am excited to get to reach a wider audience than I could otherwise. As always, I am committed to excellence and the fair treatment of all. I am comfortable teaching introductory level Economics courses all the way through serving as an adjunct thesis advisor. My personal thesis was entitled: “Are Markets Pricing in the Risks of Chinese Air Force Flyovers Into Taiwanese Airspace?” Under Dr. Zorrilla of Columbia University, I became an expert in STATA and R studio. In undergraduate, I was inducted into Omicron Delta Epsilon, the international Economics honors society. When I was waiting to start flight training for the Navy, I earned a Master's Certificate in Data Science from the University of West Florida, where I also learned SQL.

About the lesson

Hey there! My name is Woodrow Orris, and I’m so excited to be teaching on SuperProf! I have a strong passion for helping students reach their personal academic goals, especially in Economics and related subjects. I studied Quantitative Economics at the U.S. Naval Academy, earning my Bachelor of Science with Merit, and I also hold a Master’s Certificate in Data Science from the University of West Florida. Outside of numbers and charts, I’ve always loved communication and critical thinking. I was a state champion in Public Forum Debate in Nevada which really shaped how I connect topics like History and Government in the classroom. My teaching philosophy is simple: there’s no such thing as a bad student—just a teacher who hasn’t found the right way to reach them. So I focus on adapting my teaching style to meet each student’s unique needs and learning preferences. Lesson plans will obviously vary depending on the course of instruction, but I think it's important to find a happy medium among the vast history of economic concept originations, analyzing models, and looking at real world applications. Economics, broadly defined, is the study of choice, which is super broad. Therefore, it's best if we apply a bottom-up approach vice a top-down. My lessons are for anyone who wants to learn more about the world around them! However, I think students in the AP Micro/Macro courses would likely benefit the most from this content. And just for fun—when I’m not teaching, you’ll probably find me out surfing or SCUBA diving in the beautiful waters of Pensacola, Florida. I can’t wait to learn together!
