About Kiyara

I am a PhD student at the University of Dundee. My hometown is Johannesburg, South Africa. I have a BA in Fine Art and an MA in History of art from one of the universities in South Africa. Both of these degrees taught me strong analytical and critical thinking skills, which are essential for teaching English literature and language. I tutored at both school and university levels in South Africa. My background in fine arts has equipped me with strong creative skills that enable me to demonstrate English concepts in relatable and engaging ways for students. I have worked in corporate for more than six years before deciding to risk packing up my life and moving to Scotland (which I had never been to before!). My move from South Africa to Scotland demonstrated my ability to adapt to new environments and connect with diverse groups of people, which will play a huge role in fostering a positive learning atmosphere. I love meeting new people and am excited to continue my journey as a tutor in Scotland.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is centred on creating an environment where students feel comfortable asking questions. I incorporate mixed media into my lessons to make them dynamic and engaging. I will create a variety of short tasks designed to assess students' understanding of various concepts in a manageable way. The goal is to avoid overwhelming students with excessive work while introducing engaging and enjoyable activities that align with our educational objectives. For example, these tasks might include quizzes, discussions, or creative presentations that allow students to express their comprehension in a fun manner. This approach will not only maintain student interest but also facilitate ongoing evaluation of their learning progress throughout the course. My focus is on building students' confidence by enhancing their communication skills and improving their comprehension of the English language. Qualification: I have completed the Learning to Teach in Higher Education programme at the University of Dundee. Lesson structure: Each lesson lasts between 45 to 60 minutes and can be conducted online or in person.
