About Michael
I would describe myself (and others have described me) as an interdisciplinary thinker. While I am specializing in Computer Engineering and therefore STEM, I have an intermediate understanding of many other subjects including linguistics, philosophy, classics, and history. My diverse interests allow me to approach problems from several different angles and connect ideas in a more global way. If you struggle with a concept, I may be able to connect it to some other subject that feels more natural to your particular learning style or way of thinking. A common idiom is that education is about 'drawing out' what is already in a person. This comes from the Latin root of the word education, educo. The problem is that many educators are only trained in one type of thinking, they are specialists. Specialists are absolutely necessary, but they cannot see the bigger picture. If you cannot see the bigger picture, how will you ever 'draw out' the wisdom that is already in someone who exists outside your paradigm? My lessons focus on developing foundational understanding so that the application becomes self-evident. Rote practice can only go so far.

My lessons begin with a conversation. Where are you struggling? What are you struggling with? Is there any aspect of the subject that causes confusion? If the foundational understanding is solid then the application usually becomes self-evident or needs very little correction. Then, having addressed any known issues, I may ask to see an attempt at a typical problem to see where you need guidance or further instruction. This makes my lessons feel like a series of conversations that find and target gaps in understanding. Ideally, all education would be like this, but teachers and professors do not have the ability to dedicate that much time to every student.
I can tutor Algebra, Calculus 1-3, Physics 1 and 2, Digital Logic, C/C++, Elementary Russian, Attic Greek, and World History at the college level. This includes most mathematics and sciences below a college level, contact me with a specific course and I will let you know.
