About Oliver

My name is Oliver Rowe. I am a native and experienced English Teacher and I am the CEO of RONIN ENGLISH, the online English learning company that gives you the practice, correction and teaching that you need in order to feel confident, comfortable and correct when speaking English. All of our classes are online, so you can get the improvement that you need from the comfort of your own home or office.

We are a team of Native and Experienced teachers, and we are waiting to help you improve your English through our method of conversation, correction, practise and teaching.

We offer Conversation Classes, for people who want to feel more confident when speaking English at work or in their personal lives, and we also offer Writing Classes, Exam Preparation Classes, and Classes for Beginners. We can help you to develop your General English, Business English, Medical English, or English for any type of situation.

I have 10 years of experience in teaching English to all levels, group sizes and ages and to a large variety of nationalities. I have taught General English, English for Conversation and Business English and I have experience in preparing students for IELTS, Cambridge and Trinity exams. I have taught in England, France, Spain, Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Portugal. I hold a BA(hons) degree in Modern Languages and a CELTA. All of our teachers are native English-speakers with many years of teaching experience and English teaching qualifications.

About the lesson

Our teaching style is communicative, interactive and fun. The classes will depend on your needs. We will learn how to converse and understand conversations in English as well as to read and write. I learn languages myself (I speak French, Spanish and Portuguese) and I know that the more fun you are having while learning, the more you will absorb and learn the language. In Conversation Classes, you will spend the majority of your time in conversation with your teacher, talking about interesting and varied topics. The topics will depend on what you want to achieve from your classes, and what kind of conversations you need to practise for your work or your personal life. Writing and Exam Preparation Classes will be tailored to the type of practise that you need to get.

We also provide:
- optional homework activities to allow you to practise and improve your English in your free time
- advice on how to best practise and absorb English in a relaxed and passive manner
- instructional videos to explain some of the more common areas of English grammar that everyone needs to understand
- and access to optional group workshops to understand the details of the most important grammar topics.

The teacher that you will be matched with will depend on your personal learning needs and your personality. As we have a large team of teachers from a wide variety of backgrounds, we can match you with someone who has a similar professional background to you in order to help you practise the types of conversations that you need to practise for your work, and someone who has a similar personality and common interests to you, so that your classes will be as interesting and enjoyable as possible.

1) Há quanto tempo você possui uma paixão pela língua inglesa e pela cultura inglesa?
Sou Inglês nativo. Eu nasci em Grã-Bretanha então cresci na cultura inglesa. Mas sempre foi apaixonado pela língua inglesa desde que o meu pai ensinou-me a ler. Sigo lendo e aprendendo novas palavras de inglês, em quanto aprender novas línguas como francês, espanhol e português.
2) Qual é o seu autor/escritor e personagem inglesa preferida?
Iain M. Banks é o meu autor preferido. Ele é um autor escocês que escreve historias de ficção cientifica com comentários sobre a sociedade moderna. Ele cria um universo futurista nos seus livros com um estilo de escrever sobre a inteligência artificial melhor que eu nunca vi antes. A minha personagem inglesa preferida é Stephen Fry, um ator de comédia, um académico, e ativista social.
3) Conte-nos sobre a aula mais difícil ou desafiante que você já deu!
Não tenho historia do pior aula que dei. Mas agora tenho uma aluna que é bem iniciante. Tem dificuldade com a pronuncia e aprender vocabulário. Precisa muita paciência e repetição. Mais ainda assim, esta a progredir.
4) Qual, na sua opinião, é o tema mais difícil de aprender em inglês e porquê?
Para a maioria dos alunos, o tema mais difícil é os "phrasal verbs" porque os verbos incluídos neles não tem uma tradução literal . É uma coisa que se tem que aprender como vocabulário normal e pode ser confuso para os alunos.
5) O que você considera serem os requisitos para o sucesso de quem aprende?
Não tenho medo de fazer erros. Em qualquer coisa que se aprende, é nos erros que aprendemos. Todos os mestres de todas as áreas são as pessoas que tem feito mais erros.. Também, o "escutar", é uma prática muito importante para o "falar", e o "ler" é uma prática muito importante para o "escrever".
6) Pode citar três personalidades inglesas que gostava de conhecer ou partilharem consigo uma tertúlia !:D
Eric Clapton, musico inglês; Iain M. Banks, autor escocês; e Stephen Fry, ator e ativista social.
7) Partilhe connosco uma história engraçada referente à sua profissão ou experiências académicas !
Quando foi professor numa escola militar nos Emirados Árabes Unidos, tinha 30 alunos em cada aula, e os alunos acordavam todos os dias às 04h00 para o treino militar e treinavam até às 08h00, tomavam o pequeno-almoço, e depois chegavam finalmente à aula. Então estavam tão cansados, que até tinham vontade de dormir quando chegavam à aula. E como eram 30 na aula, cada vez que tentava acordar um aluno, outro dormiria. Então passei 4 meses, onde na maior parte de cada aula, só a andar em círculo acordando alunos que estavam a dormir.
8) Qual seu segredo para ser o(a) Superprof preferido(a) pelos seus alunos?
Sempre dar aula de alta qualidade, bem preparada e adaptada as necessidades. Seja simpático e seja você mesmo. Seja paciente, mas também seja proativo. Escutar bem quando os alunos falam, e se só querem falar sobre uma coisa esse dia, não empurras para seguir as materiais da aula. Você é metade professor, e metade terapeuta.
