About Katie

I am a Biomedical Science graduate with both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, with a strong academic background in the life sciences.

I completed a BSc in Biomedical, Health and Life Sciences at University College Dublin , followed by an MSc in Biomedical Science at the University of Galway, where I graduated top of my class. My academic research has included work in virology and marine fungal antibacterials. I am also an incoming Graduate Entry Medicine (BMBS) student at the University of Limerick.

Alongside my academic background, I have previous experiences providing online tutoring and volunteering with adults with special needs, experience which helped me develop strong communication, patience and interpersonal skills.

One of the reasons I enjoy teaching Biology is because I experienced first-hand how much of a difference the right teacher can make. I only began to truly enjoy Biology in 5th year after being taught by a teacher who made me see the subject differently. That experience completely changed my perspective on science and ultimately influenced the direction of my academic journey, leading me to pursue Biomedical Science. I hope to help students build that same confidence in their own abilities and realise that Biology can become far more manageable (and even enjoyable!) with the right support and teaching approach.

Outside of academics, I enjoy music, concerts, art, fitness, and spending time with friends. These are interests that have helped me appreciate the importance of balance alongside studying. I understand that Leaving Certificate students are under a huge amount of pressure, and I aim to create lessons that feel supportive, approachable, and engaging rather than something students dread each week.

About the lesson

Lessons may include:
• Breaking down more difficult topics such as genetics, respiration, photosynthesis, ecology, human systems, and reproduction
• Exam question practice and marking scheme technique
• Mandatory experiments and practical-based questions
• Revision and study strategies tailored to the Leaving Certificate course
• Support with understanding diagrams, processes, and biological terminology

*H1-standard notes can also be provided upon request and will typically be shared within one week of the topic being covered in the lesson.

Lessons are primarily aimed at Leaving Certificate Biology students, though I also offer support for Junior Cycle Science.

Lessons typically last one hour and usually take place once per week, though this can be adjusted depending on the student’s individual needs and schedule.

I believe the most important aspect of learning Biology is developing a genuine understanding of the material. My focus is on helping students understand topics as clearly as possible, while also recognising that, due to exam pressure and time constraints, it is not always possible to explore every intricate detail. For this reason, I also support students in learning and accurately recalling the key information needed to perform well in exam questions.

I understand that not every student will naturally love Biology, and that is completely okay. My goal is not simply to help students memorise information, but to make the subject feel less overwhelming and to help students build confidence in their ability to succeed. understandable, and manageable. With the right support and effective study strategies, I believe Biology can become a subject that students feel capable and confident in, regardless of their starting point.

As a science graduate, I have developed effective ways of explaining more challenging chapters in a straightforward and accessible way. My lessons focus not only on understanding the material, but also on improving exam technique and revision skills.

Availability:
During the summer months, I currently offer weekday morning and afternoon lessons. During the school year, lessons will primarily take place during evenings and Saturdays to accommodate students' school schedules.
