About Monica

I’m Mónica López Garzón, a passionate musician, singer, and educator with extensive experience teaching violin, voice, and music theory to students of all ages. My goal is to help each student develop confidence, musicality, and a lifelong love of music.

With a master’s degree in Vocal Performance from Longy School of Music of Bard College and years of teaching experience in schools and music programs, I combine structured learning with creative, personalized approaches. Whether you’re starting out or advancing your skills, I provide clear guidance, supportive feedback, and a fun, inspiring learning environment.

About the lesson

My Teaching Method and Techniques

I offer a comprehensive musical education rooted in my Master of Music in Vocal Performance. My approach is defined by precision, patience, and passion. (Also, the lesson can be in Spanish, if you wish!)

- Vocal Coaching:
I specialize in 'Freeing the Natural Voice.' We focus on the Italian school of breathing (Appoggio), resonance, and diction to ensure you can sing with power and health across any genre, be it Classical, Opera, or Pop.

- Piano (Beginners):
I am an expert in the Piano Adventures (Faber) method. For my youngest students (ages 4+), I use a 'Multi-Key' approach that makes reading music as natural as reading a book.

- Violin:
I focus on 'The Golden Posture', building a tension-free relationship with the instrument from day one to ensure a beautiful tone and technical agility.

A Typical Lesson Plan (60 Minutes)

I tailor every lesson to the student's age and goals:

- 00-15 min: Technical Foundation. (Vocalizes/scales/bowing exercises). For 4-year-olds, I use musical games to build ear-training and motor skills.

- 15-40 min: Core Repertoire. We work through your Piano Adventures books, Violin pieces, or Vocal scores, focusing on phrasing and accuracy.

- 40-55 min: Artistry & Interpretation. As a vocal coach, I teach you how to 'tell the story' of the music, focusing on expression and performance psychology.

- 55-60 min: The Weekly Map. We clarify exactly how to practice at home to see results by next week.

What Sets Me Apart as a Tutor

What makes my studio unique is the Master’s level expertise combined with a deep understanding of Early Childhood Education.

I have the high-level training to coach advanced singers, yet I possess the specific patience and pedagogical tools needed to engage a 4-year-old beginner.

I don't just teach you how to play or sing; I teach you how to be a musician, incorporating theory, history, and stage presence into every lesson.
