About John
I’m currently completing a DPhil in AI Engineering at the University of Oxford, having previously graduated with a First Class MMath in Mathematics from the University of St Andrews. Alongside my studies, I have five years of experience as an AI researcher in the maritime autonomy sector, applying mathematics and machine learning to real-world research problems. At school, I achieved 4 A*s in Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry, alongside grades 2 and 1 in STEP II and III.
My background spans both pure mathematics and applied AI, so I can help students not only understand challenging mathematical ideas, but also see how they translate into modern fields such as machine learning. I particularly enjoy helping ambitious students go beyond the curriculum, whether that means preparing for university-level mathematics or developing an AI/ML project of their own.
Outside academics, I’m a keen rugby player and currently play for the University of Oxford. I’ve been fortunate to represent both Oxford and St Andrews in the English and Scottish Varsity matches respectively.

My lessons are tailored to each student’s goals, whether you’re preparing for university mathematics, tackling advanced topics, or building an AI/ML project for your application.
I focus on developing intuition and independent problem-solving rather than memorising methods. We build concepts from first principles, then work through increasingly challenging problems together, with guidance and prompts where needed. For AI/ML, I combine the underlying mathematics with practical Python implementation and project-based learning.
Lessons are typically one hour and are aimed at A-Level students, university applicants, and undergraduates looking to strengthen their mathematics or explore AI and machine learning.
I’m currently undertaking a DPhil in AI for Robotics in the Department of Engineering at the University of Oxford, following an MMath from St Andrews, and bring my experience as a researcher in marine autonomy into my teaching.
