About Miranda

Hello! My name is Miranda, and I'm a rising junior at Parsons School of Design in New York City, where I'm pursuing a BFA in Product Design. I'm currently on the Dean's List and continue to develop my skills through coursework in technical drawing, CAD, rapid prototyping, and design thinking. Before Parsons, I studied Fashion Design in high school and built a strong foundation in fine arts, fashion illustration, and garment construction, giving me experience across a wide range of traditional, physical, and digital artistic practices.

I teach technical drawing, observational sketching, still life, painting (oil, watercolor, and acrylic), concept ideation, and digital design using Adobe Illustrator, with working knowledge of Photoshop and Procreate. I am also open to teaching other physical mediums like whittling, wax carving, or even fashion construction. It all varies on what students are interested in! I also have firsthand experience creating both high school and college art portfolios, and I'm currently developing my own professional portfolio, so I understand what schools and creative programs look for and how to help students showcase their best work.

As a tutor, I strive to create a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes, and growing at their own pace. I'm patient, detail-oriented, and easygoing, and I believe every student can improve with encouragement and consistent practice. My experience as a summer school counselor for children ages 6–8 has taught me how to adapt lessons to different personalities and learning styles, and I'm happy to work with students of all ages and experience levels.

Outside of art and design, I love expressing my creativity through journaling, collecting cute stationery and stickers, writing to pen pals, and exploring new places through traveling. I'm also a big fan of movies, TV shows, anime, and spending time with my corgi! I was born and raised in New York City and come from a Hong Kong Chinese background, so I'm fluent in English and Cantonese, with a beginner understanding of Mandarin.

Whether you're learning to draw for the first time, building a portfolio, exploring digital illustration, or simply looking for a creative hobby, I'd love to help you develop your skills and enjoy the artistic process.

Hi! I'm a rising junior at Parsons School of Design studying Product Design, and I'm excited to help students develop their artistic skills in a fun, supportive, and encouraging environment. As a current design student myself, I understand both the challenges and rewards of learning art, and I strive to be the kind of tutor I would have wanted when I was first starting out.

My background combines traditional fine art with modern design. Before studying Product Design at Parsons, I studied Fashion Design in high school and built a strong foundation in fine arts throughout middle school. I have experience in technical drawing, still life drawing, color pencil, observational sketching, concept ideation, and painting with oil, watercolor, and acrylic, as well as wax carving and whittling. Whether you're looking to improve your drawing fundamentals, strengthen your creativity, learn a new skill, or simply explore art as a hobby, I'd love to help you reach your goals!

Every student learns differently, so I tailor each lesson to your interests, skill level, and goals. Rather than focusing on memorizing techniques, I teach students how to observe, think creatively, and build confidence in their own artistic abilities.

My lessons would include:
A break down of the basic fundamentals in drawing such as proportion, perspective, lighting, and shading
Technical and observational drawing
Sketching techniques to improve speed and confidence
Painting techniques for watercolor, acrylic, and oil
Personalized feedback and exercises to help students continue improving outside of lessons

I believe mistakes are essential. It’s an important part of learning, and can even sometimes end up as a happy accident! So, I highly encourage students to experiment, ask questions, enjoy the creative process, and most of all, to have fun!

A typical lesson would begin with a short warm-up exercise to build confidence and loosen up. From there, we'll introduce a new technique or concept through demonstrations and examples before practicing together step by step. As students become more comfortable, they'll work more independently while receiving guidance and constructive feedback throughout the lesson. We always finish with a review of what we've learned and suggestions for continued practice.

As a current Parsons student, I'm actively learning from professional designers and artists while staying up to date with contemporary design practices. My background in product design, fashion design, and fine art allows me to teach both traditional 2D and 3D artistic skills, as well as creative problem-solving. So whether you're interested in art as a hobby, looking to strengthen your skills for school, or considering a future career in art or design, I'm excited and committed to helping you grow and achieve your goals in a supportive and encouraging environment!

I also have experience working with young children as a summer school counselor for ages 6–8, so I understand how to create patient, engaging, and encouraging lessons for younger learners while adapting my teaching style to each student's needs.

My lessons are perfect for:
Beginners with little or no art experience
Elementary, middle school, and high school students
Students taking art classes who want extra support
Students interested in building a portfolio for art or design programs
Anyone looking to learn more or improve their drawing, sketching, painting, or creative thinking
Adults who want to learn art as a hobby or rediscover their creativity

No matter your experience level, my goal is to help you build strong artistic foundations, develop confidence, perhaps teach you a new skill, and enjoy creating. As an artist myself, I look forward to helping others grow as an artist as well!
