About Anna
I am an English tutor with several years of experience teaching at both school and university level. I have a first-class degree and a Masters with distinction in English Literature, and am coming to the completion of a PhD in the subject at the University of Edinburgh. My doctorate is specifically on medieval literature, but I have both studied and taught literature from the Middle Ages up to present day.
In 2015 I worked as a private tutor, assisting students with Higher English specifically. The following year I took on the role of Peer Learning and Support Assistant at the Edinburgh University Students' Association, focusing on fostering the development of peer learning schemes across the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at the University. As part of this job I compiled and devised an extensive guide on study skills techniques which is still used by peer learning schemes at the university. Throughout 2019 and 2020 I worked as an English Literature Tutor at the University of Edinburgh, specifically teaching and marking the work of first year students.

I offer one-to-one tuition in National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher English, providing support and guidance in all aspects of the courses, including:

- Critical essay writing
- Grammar and punctuation
- Verbal assessment
- Revision techniques
- Exam strategies
I seek to develop study schedules and processes which support the learning styles and requirements of each individual tutee, and am particularly experienced in tailoring my teaching to meet the needs of students with specific learning difficulties (eg. dyslexia, dyspraxia, etc). I centre my sessions around a mixture of written exercises and discussion-based activities, designed to bolster my students' ability to analyse and respond to the literature they are presented with, and meet the requirements of the SQA course specifications. I think it is important to assist my students in developing the autonomous and independent learning skills which will help them to approach literature with confidence.
For the foreseeable future, all tuition will take place over zoom. Post-Covid, however, I am willing to travel throughout Edinburgh, Midlothian, and East Lothian. I am DBS disclosure checked, with PVG pending.
