About Ryan
I have over ten years of teaching experience and working with students to reach their academic goals. I am a former sessional lecturer and laboratory instructor in Chemistry from MacEwan University in the Physical Science Department (2023-2024) and was the highest ranked new instructor based on student surveys during that time. Previously, I was a Graduate Teaching Assistant at the University of Alberta Department of Chemistry for a variety of university-level chemistry courses: 1st year chemistry, 2nd year analytical chemistry and upper level analytical chemistry/instrumental techniques (2018-2023). During graduate school and until present day, I have been an online tutor for a variety of subjects including high school algebra and statistics, pre-calculus and calculus along with university level general chemistry, organic chemistry and statistics. Prior to graduate school, I was a laboratory assistant for Allied Health Chemistry at Towson University during my undergraduate years (2015-2018). Currently, I am an applications chemist in the industry, working on the development of a miniaturized chemical analyzer called a gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS).

From experience as a student, I understand the burning question “why does this matter?” I believe that the best way to teach is through inspiring students to see the importance of their work and studies. The inspiration becomes motivation for improvement. My approach to any lesson is to start with the foundational knowledge and build up to the concept at hand through relatable situations. For example, when teaching the difference between zeroth, first and second order kinetics to first year university students, I used the well-known example of alcohol metabolism to illustrate how a zero-order reaction's kinetics can be described. I have used these lesson plans for both high school and university students for subjects like statistics, general chemistry and organic chemistry.
