About Marketta

OVERVIEW -- Too long, didn't read? No worries, look here :)
Hello, I'm Marketta! I have 8+ years of experience studying, tutoring, and teaching in the life sciences. My extensive years of dedicated study make me highly qualified in teaching the material to students of all levels, yet because of my recent graduation, I'm still very familiar with and can relate to the challenging landscape of high school and college life my students are often navigating. With multiple years under my belt, I'm very patient in my work, creating a welcoming, non-judgmental environment for my students to learn. I like to make each session a collaborative effort. As I cater to your unique learning style, we decide what your goals/takeaways are for that session. I love working with awesome people and making the tutoring experience as fun as possible! That way we not only both have an enjoyable time but also so that my students are learning in the most conducive environment.

MY BACKGROUND, CREDENTIALS, & EXPERIENCE:
An Arizona native, I decided to stayed in-state on scholarship at Barrett, the Honors College at Arizona State University, where I quickly fell in love with biology and the life sciences. The entirety of my college years I was enrolled in a rigorous curriculum across the physical and life sciences (bio, biochem, genetics, microbio, cellular, developmental bio, evolution, chem, physics, etc.), worked for multiple tutoring and teaching organizations, started up my own club for biological science majors, and actively conducted and presented my undergraduate honors thesis research project. I worked in several research labs throughout my degree, working very closely with faculty at the university, even sparking a collaboration between them and a mentor from a previous internship at the Translational Genomics Research Institute (TGen) in downtown Phoenix.

Upon defending my honors thesis, I graduated summa cum laude with my Bachelors of Science and corresponding honors degree in Biological Sciences (Genetics, Cellular & Developmental Biology). After graduation I moved out to California to follow my passions for teaching and research at UC Irvine where I joined the Interdepartmental Neuroscience PhD Program, earned my Masters of Science, and successfully advanced as a PhD candidate currently working on my dissertation.

My history tutoring and teaching extends from the elementary through college level, as I spent 3 years volunteer tutoring in math, language, and science for under-served middle and high schoolers while attending Barrett, the Honors college in Tempe, AZ. Additionally I have 2 years of hands-on experience teaching at the university level. I've taught numerous students during my teaching assistantships for several courses at UC Irvine, including multiple quarters of the core undergraduate Neurobiology laboratory, as well as several other upper division bio and neuro courses.

WHY I LOVE TUTORING:
Teaching and tutoring students in Bio and Chem are among my favorite. So much of the curriculum applies to understanding our physical world, those magical, hidden everyday phenomena, and even our own biology! Putting the classroom content into perspective encourages true understanding and retention of the material.

WHAT MY STUDENTS TAKEAWAY FROM WORKING WITH ME:
Biology can be overwhelming to study as it is a gigantic subject! And it can require a lot of memorization. With my technique I break down complex concepts so that my students have a better grasp of the smaller parts. We then use those building blocks to achieve a greater mastery of the material, which my students can apply towards any kind of assignment or exam thrown their way. My goal is to teach you to problem solve like a teacher does. I've found that once you can explain it to me in your own words the comprehension tends to stick, and you're ready for any question!

WHY CHOOSE ME AS YOUR NEXT TUTOR :)
My extensive years of working across several laboratories, where the core fundamentals of molecular and cellular biology and chemistry are directly applied on a daily basis, allow me to relate 'real world' applications to my students when teaching the material.

It is my mission to help my students succeed in their assignments and exams, but also provide coaching beyond the classroom, as I've successfully navigated all the majors milestones including AP exams, college admissions, honors curriculum, multiple internships, my capstone honors thesis project, graduate school interviews, and the successful completion of my Masters in Neuroscience.
As such, an important component to my tutoring style is to mentor my students with the wisdom I've gained throughout the process, whatever their goals may be. I really take pride in being able to connect with my students, not only to help you learn the material for your immediate grade, but also assist you as you strategize what you want out of your educational experience, helping you make the most of your time in school for the longevity of your academic success.
