About Matt
I am a postgraduate research student at the University of Exeter. I am currently working on a thesis revolving around United States press publications and their relationship with nuclear crises (primarily looking at the Lucky Dragon incident of 1954, Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, and Chernobyl reactor explosion of 1986). I specialize in 20th Century, Cold War and U.S. history, but I have a breadth of knowledge dating back to ancient topics like the Romans and Ancient Egyptians. Regardless of the period of study, I can help develop key historical skills that are required to be successful in the field of history.
I have completed my undergraduate degree at the University of Southampton with a 2:1 classification. I am originally from a small village in Suffolk, where I used to tutor family friends and neighbors. I now hope to use my tutoring experience to help students meet their educational ambitions.

I provide a tailored approach to each student, taking into consideration their level of study, topic and individual personality. I ask my tutees what areas they would like to work on and shape our initial lessons around this.
Lessons will try to incorporate a mixture of content-based learning, coupled with historical discussion, analysis, and writing. I like to facilitate discussion as I believe it is important to develop critical thinking skills as these have a wide array of applications across subjects. I actively encourage students to come up with their own ideas and concepts and try to avoid spoon-feeding information as I believe this to be less useful.
I will try to test what we have covered in previous lessons as we progress in order to reinforce key points. If there is anything that is not understood or would like to be revised, I wholeheartedly encourage it and am happy to return to topics/areas that require more attention.
If there is not a particular historical period that the tutee would like to work on, we can arrange tutorials to focus on developing historical skills. I can aid in preparation for exams, course work, and I can always provide support out of our lessons if a student requires.
