About Gail

I am a Principal Lecturer in higher education and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, with over 20 years of experience in teaching, curriculum development, and academic leadership. My work spans undergraduate, postgraduate, and professional education, with a strong focus on developing evidence-based, practice-ready health professionals.

I have extensive experience teaching in public health and my main interest is in cardiac rehabilitation, exercise prescription, and behaviour change, supporting health professionals to deliver safe, effective, and person-centred care. My teaching combines clinical expertise with applied learning, bridging the gap between theory and practice.

I have extensive experience designing and delivering face to face, online and blended cardiac rehabilitation programmes, creating engaging, interactive learning environments that support reflection, critical thinking, and professional development. My approach is grounded in an evidence-based focus and a commitment to empowering individuals to build confidence, capability, and to make the very best of themselves through high-quality education.

For those diagnosed with a cardiac condition and looking for professional, supportive rehabilitation and lifestyle advice:

My approach to teaching online cardiac rehabilitation is grounded in the belief that effective recovery is built on knowledge, confidence, and sustained behaviour change. A diagnosis of cardiac disease can be life-altering; education therefore needs to be not only evidence based, but also reassuring, empowering, and tailored to the individual.

As a qualified Phase IV Cardiac Rehabilitation Exercise Specialist, I design sessions that translate evidence-based principles from cardiac rehabilitation and behaviour change into clear, practical guidance that patients can apply immediately in their daily lives. Complex medical concepts are explained in accessible language, enabling patients to understand their condition, manage risk factors, and make informed decisions about their health.

A core element of my philosophy is patient-centred learning. Online delivery can feel impersonal, so I prioritise interaction, reflection, and dialogue. Sessions are structured to encourage questions, shared experiences, and gradual confidence-building, recognising that each patient’s starting point, concerns, and goals are different.

Safety and progression are central. Exercise and lifestyle advice are carefully scaffolded, ensuring that patients feel secure while developing the skills and resilience needed for long-term self-management. I emphasise sustainable habits rather than short-term change, supporting individuals to integrate physical activity, nutrition, and stress management into everyday routines.

I also recognise the emotional dimension of cardiac recovery. My teaching facilitates a supportive environment where patients can rebuild trust in their bodies, reduce anxiety, and regain a sense of control. Encouragement, clarity, and consistency underpin every session.

Ultimately, my aim is to help patients move from uncertainty to confidence, equipping them not only to recover, but to maintain and improve their cardiovascular health over time.

For health professionals looking to learn about the theory and practice of cardiac rehabilitation:

I deliver evidence-based teaching in cardiac rehabilitation for health professionals, grounded in current clinical guidelines and best practice. As a Principal Lecturer in higher education and a Senior Fellow of Advance HE, with over 20 years of teaching experience, I bring both academic leadership and extensive pedagogic expertise to my practice.

My approach integrates scientific knowledge with practical application, ensuring learners can translate theory into safe, effective patient care across diverse settings. I focus on developing confidence and clinical reasoning, enabling practitioners to assess risk, prescribe safe and appropriate exercise, and support behaviour change.

Teaching is interactive and case-based, encouraging reflection, discussion, and application to real-world scenarios. I emphasise person-centred care, supporting professionals to tailor interventions, enhance adherence, and address the psychological and social dimensions of cardiac recovery.

Through structured, supportive online learning, I aim to equip health professionals with the skills, judgement, and confidence to understand the core principles that underpin high-quality cardiac rehabilitation that ultimately improves patient outcomes and supports long-term cardiovascular health.
