About Christine

Having now accrued over 1000 hours of in-person and online teaching experience, I know that my niche is inspiring confidence and literacy within maths. I believe that maths isn't taught well overall in the UK, that it should be driven by curiosity and intuition rather than endless repetition of questions. When I was in school, I always loved maths, this was partly due to me being lucky enough to have passionate teachers that wanted to pass that passion onto their students. I was in the international schooling system and this meant I moved country every two years, my subjects were constantly changing with the only consistent one being maths, and I found it beautiful that the content was same even when the context was different. After loving maths in school, I went on to study pure mathematics at the University of Edinburgh, where I achieved a first class degree with honours. During this time at university, I tutored many students one-on-one and also taught in classrooms around the city. When I graduated in 2019, I found that I was missing teaching and immediately began tutoring again. Along with tutoring in maths, I tutor for university admissions tests with personal experience in UKCAT and UCAT examinations - scoring in the top percentile nationally in each. Outside of tuition, I work in financial derivative trading specialising in applications of python and AI. Due to the training required to enter the trading space, I also offer career development tutoring and mentoring.

About the lesson

To structure a lesson, I begin by asking the student if they have a preferred lesson type, if they would want a tutorial on any subject, practice questions with details on each step, or if they would want to just jump in and begin at the start of the course and do a blend of questions and tutorial, with a focus on any areas they're confused by. To help students achieve their goals, I study past papers from their subject and look at exactly the types of questions asked, which ones are asked regularly, and ensure the student will be able to work out any question they are given. To do this, I work subject-by-subject through the course, delivering questions throughout. For example, if we were to study logarithms in one lesson, I would end the lesson by working through all the past paper question formats on logs (there is one in every higher question paper). If we run out of time or notice issues near the end of a lesson, I'm always happy to run over until we both feel happy and comfortable with your understanding.
