My approach as a tutor is to have the student begin from their knowledge base and learn to use the vocabulary and terms of the math until such time as it becomes second nature to speak the language of the mathematics. This combination of literacy combined with the mathematics is what sets me apart in my field. A typical lesson plan would begin with some basic level of problems to solve. This typically involves showing several examples each incorporating increasing levels of difficulty until the student becomes comfortable and skilled to mastery of the content.
