About Dan

I am a professional musician and teacher working in the Cardiff area having recently graduated from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama. I am currently involved in a variety of musical projects that span a number of different générés and settings.

I have been playing music for most of my life, first picking up the guitar some 13 years ago after learning both the trumpet and piano 3 years prior. I started by teaching myself, which has enabled me to discover how I learn. Additionally, I have experienced multiple different learning environments due to being taught by various teachers, as well as playing music in different contexts -- all the way from brass banding to hard rock!

My first influences on guitar were Eric Clapton, Slash, B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix. I was drawn to the impressive and powerful sound of the electric guitar and how each player sounds distinctly different.

Nowadays, I am influenced by a multitude of musicians and spend the majority of my time geeking out over different chord voicings and melodic lines! Whilst my personal focus is jazz, I love to play other styles of music, such as blues, soul, funk and rock and believe that there is value to be gained playing and teaching multiple genres of music. I believe that this is essential when attempting to find your voice as a musician.

I am incredibly passionate about music, constantly trying to improve my understanding and performance.

I look forward to teaching you!

My teaching method is to focus on the principal aspects of music in a practical, topic driven manner. I believe that this is important as it enables students to learn the music that they like to listen to whilst still improving their technique, rhythm and musical understanding. This is because I believe that the pupil's enthusiasm and enjoyment of music is what keeps them practicing and progressing, as opposed to standardised exercises and tests.

I strongly believe that practical application is key when learning how to play music. For instance, learning how to play scales is essential when learning how to improvise, however, it can seem boring when it is practiced without context. When I am teaching, I am always trying to demonstrate the musical application of techniques through composition, improvisation and the performance of tunes. Composition and creativity are elements that I focus on during lessons as this is something that is unfortunately neglected by the school music curriculum. I use composition as a tool within my lessons as composing and improvising is one of the best ways to internalise technique.

I am committed to learning myself and so I am constantly expanding my knowledge of music, as opposed to relying on what I already possess. I strongly believe that a teacher who is trying to better their own craft is a better communicator, as their study enables them to relate to the student's learning process.

My number one priority is making sure that I can foster my students' love of music whilst improving their technique and ability.
