About Nick
Nicholas “Nick” Rothouse is a Dallas-based touring/studio musician specializing in world percussion. Most recently, Nicholas joined singer/songwriter Maggie Rogers for her 2024 Sheds Tour and her Today Show appearance in August, 2024. Nicholas joined songwriter/DJ/producer SG Lewis in 2022-23 for his U.S. and European tours, which included performances on the Jimmy Fallon Late Show and Coachella. Prior to that, Nicholas was the percussionist for Tom Misch for various tour dates in the U.S., Canada, Europe, South Korea, and the 2022 Fuji Rock Festival in Japan. Nicholas got his start as a touring musician in 2014, when he spent the summer in Europe with his grandfather’s Latin rock band, Tito and Tarantula. Since then, he’s toured with artists such as RC Williams (Erykah Badu, Snoop Dogg, RC & the Gritz) and seven-time Grammy winner Shaun Martin (Snarky Puppy, Kirk Franklin), in both his Gogo band and jazz quintet. In 2017, his interest in West African music led him to Ghana and Mali, where he spent one month traveling and learning from Grammy-nominated musician and Djembefola, Weedie Braimah. In addition to Braimah, Nick’s mentors include Jose Aponte, Fausto Cuevas, Frank Moka (Erykah Badu) and Luis Avila. As skillful as he is versatile, Nick is adept at playing West African, Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian, Funk, Hip Hop, and many more styles of percussion. He has performed and recorded with a multitude of established and up-and-coming acts, from jazz/funk/fusion groups like Kwinton Gray Project, Wasafiri, and Ghost-Note, Hip Hop Acts such as Cure for Paranoia and RC and the Gritz, and individual artists such as Ashleigh Smith and Dana Harper. Nick has also worked with the Dallas Theater Center for their productions of Twelfth Night and In The Heights (2019). He’s an annual fixture of Dallas’ Riverfront Jazz Festival and Snarky Puppy’s GroundUp Music Festival in Florida, where he’s also an honorary member of samba percussion community, Miamibloco. Nick studied percussion performance at the University of North Texas, where he performed and toured with the seven-time Grammy-nominated One O’Clock Lab Band. Additionally, he was a part of the Latin Jazz Lab Band, Afro-Cuban Ensemble, Percussion Ensemble and Brazilian Ensemble, among others.

My teaching method is focused on bringing out the best in each of my students, by starting with their specific needs and wants as a musician. I want to help them execute whatever song or style of music that they are wanting to learn. Over time I challenge my students with different concepts and ideas that will help push them outside of their comfort zones, giving them a deeper understanding into their craft. A typical lesson plan would involve a 10-15 min warm-up on whatever instrument we are working on, 20-30 min learning and drilling a rhythm/song/ or style, and the remaining time would be dedicated to working on areas that need a little more attention. This time is also good for any questions, improvisation, or more drilling. I have an understanding of many different types of music from years and years of studying, transcribing, practicing, gigging, touring, and recording. I come from a classical background so I know how to read and write music, but I have also spent a lot of time learning music by ear. I help my students find a balance between both of those skills, while always focusing on training your ears first and foremost. These lessons are for any level! I have taught very beginner students, and I have taught professionals who wanted to refine their feel, sharpen their technique, and gain a deeper understanding into more advanced concepts. I teach Djembe, Dundun, Congas, Bongos, Cajon, Drum set, Pandeiro, Marimba, Vibraphone, Classical Snare Drum, Timpani, and many more percussion instruments. I also teach rhythm training/theory to all levels of musicians and vocalists.
