About Leslie

Every mind works differently! This concept is always at the core of my teaching: I believe it is my duty to adapt my classes to the needs of my students. There is no such thing as too many questions, too many “I don’t understand” or “can you repeat, please”: only when you understand the content of the course and learn solid skills will I be considered to have completed my mission.
Chinese is a beautiful and special language. I have been lucky enough to have the chance to share my passion with many wonderful students from all over the world.

About the lesson

(I) Teaching content

1. Phonetics: At the introductory stage of Chinese, we spend about one week focusing on phonetics. The content includes phonemes and phonological collocations, teaching tones, and the three tones. Of course, the teaching of phonetics and intonation will continue throughout the whole Chinese teaching process.

2. Chinese characters: The teaching of Chinese characters is always accompanied by the teaching of phonetics and grammar. At the beginning, there are about 10 characters in each lesson, and at the syntax stage, there are 15-25 characters in each lesson.

3. Conversation: The teaching of phonetics and Chinese characters is always combined with the teaching of communicative conversations. At the elementary level, the text is arranged in a way that sentence-type conversations are the main focus. In the classroom, I mainly focus on leading students to listen to the text, read the text, and recite the text. On the basis of familiarity with the sentence patterns in the text, students are then guided to use them flexibly and be able to organise their own conversations.

Vocabulary: The teaching of vocabulary is naturally integrated into the text. The conversations and parts of speech in the text provide a language environment for vocabulary teaching. Students can understand the meaning of vocabulary and the context in which it is used while reading the text well. Of course, I will need to add more language materials to the key vocabulary to help students better grasp their usage.

5. Grammar: The teaching of intensive reading at the elementary level of Chinese is based on the grammatical structure of the text. Through lectures and exercises on the text, supplemented by example sentences and demonstration of grammatical points as appropriate, the students will be able to perceive and understand the significance, function, and context of each grammar point, and be guided to use the grammar to speak, write, and express themselves.

6. Exercises: Each lesson of the intensive reading course is designed with some exercises, including comprehension exercises, imitative exercises and communicative exercises. I will let the students complete some of them in class and some of them as homework after class according to their needs.

It is most suitable for students who have a basic knowledge of Chinese and want to improve their communication and expression skills. If you have zero foundation, you can also enrol and we will start from the very beginning with the basic part.
