About Hannah
I love teaching so much, I seem to keep doing degrees in it! As part of my MA , I am taking a bit of time out of the classroom, but I miss working with people to help them get the most out of all that English can offer as a subject. I completed my undergraduate degree in Classics at Cambridge University in 2016 and then went to work as a TA specialising in one-to-one support for students with SEN. I completed my PGCE in English at UCL in 2019. Since then, I've been working in mixed attainment classrooms, supporting students of all levels to enjoy English - even if they tell me they hate poetry!
I have taught three GCSE classes and three A level cohorts in that time as well as lots and lots of years 7-9.
While my advert here focuses quite heavily on exam elements, I teach English because I think it is truly one of the subjects that most encourages critical thinking, debate and emotional intelligence in students. I have loved it since I was young, and I keep wanting to do more and more English - in my academic life, my career and my spare time (don't ask about my to be read list!)
However, you don't spend five years teaching in state classrooms without being painfully aware that, for lots of students, English can be a really stressful element of schooling. It shouldn't have to be. I want to help students unlock existing knowledge and encourage them to bring their understanding of the world to the study of English. From this foundation, we can work together to build understanding and confidence that can support students with their work in the classroom.

I have been teaching English in schools for the past five years. I'm currently also completing a masters in English Education, which is why I have a little more time for tutoring. I have been published writing about English Education, including writing about the teaching of Shakespeare, and given a talk at the London Association of the Teachers of English about Shakespeare in the classroom.
What a typical lesson might look like will depend on your particular needs, but below are some examples of what I can offer.
- Live marking with students where the marking is explained against the mark scheme.
- Modelling and co-writing exam essays/ answers to practice key exam skills
- Modelling and co-completing annotation of unseen/seen works
- Support with the specifics of the Language questions
- Support with creative writing, both fiction and non fiction
- Close reading practice with particular texts - eg exam texts - such as Shakespeare to improve student confidence.
- Practice turning verbal ideas into strong written answers
- Support with key texts, including recapping key themes/ characters etc
- Support with reading and incorporating critical literature at a level
- Supporting A Level coursework, both the close reading of texts and the formulating of arguments
- support with homework/ mock preparation/ understanding marking
While the above examples are particularly targeted towards the A Level and GCSE qualifications, I also enjoy working with KS3 and will happily create a program of wider reading/ writing to assist younger students such as:
- creative writing prompts and then live 'marking' together to help students with grammar and spelling as well as confidence
- A program of extracts to assist students with encouraging wider reading and more experience of genre
- Support with homework of any kind
- Poetry support
Lessons will be an hour long, unless requested otherwise.
