About Stuart

I am a professional Graphic Designer, Crafts-person and Teacher with my own creative practice. I studied Printmaking & Photomedia at Central St. Martin's; a Master's level PGCE, at the University of Leeds, gaining Qualified Teachers Status (QTLS) a year later and a Master's in Design at Northumbria University. I have taught for 20 years at both Leeds Arts University and in York, at Undergraduate and Levels 3 & 4 (UAL Foundation and UAL Extended Diploma.)
I have been a Pathway Leader, specialising in Communication Design which means Graphic Design, Illustration, Animation and Comics. I am also a specialist Contextual Studies Lecturer. This means the study of Art History, Ideas, Theories and Movements which accompany studio based programmes. For instance, I covered subjects such as The Bauhaus, Swiss Style, Post-Colonialism, Feminist Art, Semiotics and Film Studies.
My ethos is to inspire deep learning through individualised tuition.

About the lesson

My approach to Art & Design learning centres around individual creativity. We all approach design problems and fine art enquiry differently, from a personal perspective, arrived at as much from our life experiences as from our own art & design aspirations.
I champion 1 to 1 teaching and learning from level 3 (UK age 17/18, Extended Diploma, 'A' Level etc.) up to Level 6 (3rd year of Degree, any age group) including Contextual Study for each level.
The minimum length of session is 1 hour. Sessions can focus on drawing approaches, problem solving, ideation techniques, critical thinking and use of sketch/note-books to document thoughts and processes. I can also provide tuition in to printing techniques, typography, Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign, through making simple publications to explore layout and composition, branding and logo design.
I have taught students from age 17/18 upwards to mature students and my ethos of 1 to 1, highly individualised learning has remained a constant.
I have an MA in Design, a Masters Teaching Qualification and a Degree from Central St. Martin's School of Art & Design, London. Whatever aspect of Graphic Design, Printing, Illustration or Contextual Study you want to explore, I can design a bespoke programme for you from as little as a 1 hour 'refresher' to a multi-week course.
