About Felix

I completed the IB HL math course for applications and interpretations with the maximum allowed mark, which features the university level equivalencies to all major Ontario curriculum subjects. I also have received completion credits for the Differential & Integral Calculus at Queens University.

I've had experience tutoring my peers since the 9th grade.

I lived abroad in Costa Rica for six years prior to returning to Canada for University, during which I attended Del Mar Academy in Nosara Guanacaste. As a smaller school with limited resources, the supplementary mathematics education greatly lacked.

I also completed the Ontario Math Curriculum until grade 11, when I began the IB curriculum.

This international experience in an area with significant economic and standard of living disparities allowed me to develop a perspective on how opportunity and living conditions impact learning and growth. Many of my close friends experienced unique household situations that would be unheard of in North America outside of extreme cases. Simultaneously, originally Spanish speaking students were completing difficult IB courses in English due to limited resources. It was in helping these students that I developed many of my teaching strategies, by working through conceptual and language challenges to communicate mathematics that connects with students from a range of backgrounds and learning needs.

My tutoring was far from exclusive to students with greater difficulty. During my higher level math course, I would regularly reteach difficult concepts to my peers as we moved through the course, as a result of my unique mathematical learning strategies.

Some areas where I have seen significant success with providing alternative ways of conceptualizing concepts where many students struggle include:

Fractions, Vectors, Differential and Integral Calculus, trigonometry, 2d and 3d geometry, and unit conversions

Lessons offered to high school students of all mathematical abilities.

In a typical lesson, I can either teach a mathematical concept from the ground up, or work on concepts the curriculum has covered to deepen and formulate more intuitive understandings.

When teaching from the ground up, I like to first introduce problems intuitively, connecting the content to concepts the student already comprehends. Then we extend the understanding into new areas, by introducing new concepts and proving them mathematically where needed.

When working on previously covered content, I like to introduce a series of practice questions. I then cooperate with the student to identify which aspects or ideas of their understanding are either lacking or incomplete.

We then explore these concepts from different perspectives, until they are able to build a strong and intuitive understanding that allows them to apply the knowledge with confidence.
