About Cat

Hey I'm Cat (they/them)! I am a native speaker in Mandarin Chinese with bilingual proficiency in English. I'm a passionate Chinese language teacher with solid understandings of cultural subtleties in both cultures.
Having studied Politics and International Studies (including gender studies, Chinese politics, Islamic studies etc.) and architecture, and having other broad interests (business, fashion, music etc.), being fluent in Chinese and English, and being queer myself, I have a deep understanding of cultural subtleties in both Chinese and English languages, diverse cultures in the world, which allows me to teach with rich background knowledge and context. This makes learning more intuitive, relatable and helps students grasp not just the words, but also the cultural meanings behind them.
I can help you transfer your current knowledge and interests in English to Chinese and help you express yourself in your own style in Chinese.
I’m also familiar with current Chinese media content online and Chinese music. I love to teach colloquial expressions on top of the textbook standards, and I’m good at catering to different students’ different interests and needs in learning. I use TV shows and music as references to help make the learning process more fun.
My goal is to make learning Chinese a fun and interactive experience that keeps students motivated and confident in their progress. Leaning a new language can be hard and I’m proud of you all for taking the first steps!

About the lesson

I’ve taught Chinese to ABC students with different levels of Chinese background knowledge, other native English speakers, university students, young professionals, and high school students, tailoring my approach to suit different learning styles and needs. I can help with HSK or HSC exam preparation, Chinese for business, or casual conversational tutoring for travelling.

For beginner level students, I primarily use HSK textbook conversations, incorporating role-playing and reading aloud to reinforce learning. My method focuses on pinyin pronunciation first, ensuring students develop a strong foundation in speaking and listening before gradually recognising and understanding Chinese characters. I also break down sentence structure, word formation, and character composition to make complex concepts more accessible.
For intermediate level students, I focus more on vocabulary, grammar and character recognition. I encourage them to speak more and form their own sentences so they get more practice in not just reading but also thinking and speaking in Chinese.
For higher level students, it usually depends on what their needs and interests are and I encourage them to not just talk about basic topics but also, for example, express their views in their own professional fields, or stand up for yourself in a disagreement and help them understand the subtitles in different words and expressions.

To keep lessons engaging, I integrate TV shows and songs that provide real-world exposure to the language. I am patient and adaptable, with experience teaching students with ADHD, and I adjust my approach to create an effective and enjoyable learning experience for every student.
