About Megan

I began tutoring six months ago when I moved back to my hometown of Bristol. I currently tutor one thirteen year old and another fourteen year old who are both preparing for upcoming GCSE's. I happily tutor them in all subjects although English is my specialist. I found maths and science difficult at times at school but have found a new appreciation for the subjects since seeing how they apply to real-life situations such as gardening and cooking. I am now halfway through a year-long, part-time Practical and Sustainability course in Bristol learning from a huge variety of different wonderful teachers about the principles of permaculture (sustainable gardening) and am loving learning in such an exciting and non-competitive environment. I feel it has given me a new perspective on how best to learn, and what support is needed in order to do so well.

The structure me and my tutees usually follow is a general catch up on their well-being and life at school/at home before working through whatever homework, revision or lesson prep needs to be completed. I prepare for sessions a little bit before hand but find that working through new topics with fresh perspectives and on a level playing field is more engaging for both of us and that we learn a lot through teaching each other and sharing stories, making up rhymes and songs to memorise facts and drawing pictures and posters together etc.

My two tutees are progressing very well. One has received the top mark in their science mock tests the past two times and received linguist of the year quite recently. The other says they are feeling the happiest and most comfortable they have felt at school for a while and is finding new pleasure in reading and writing in their spare time. I won't take full credit for these developments!

Tutoring is one of the most rewarding jobs I have ever done. It allows space for creativity, reassurance, solidarity, fun, inspiration and progression. Everyone should be allowed that privilege of one-to-one interaction in a structured yet nurturing creative space - somewhere halfway between home and at school, in order to make sense of those two worlds separately.

I think teaching should be a shared experience between teacher and pupil, and should open up discussions and insight into various other topics in addition to the particular one it is addressing. The sessions with my tutees are self-led. The tutee states what they would ideally like to complete in the session and we work together towards achieving that, elaborating on certain points to give background and texture to the subject matter and making revision plans as we go on what may need to be reviewed or discussed further at a later date.

I believe you can spend a long time, years even, teaching someone something they don't want to learn in one or two specific ways, but the minute you find one small thing about the subject that evokes interest or excitement, you can learn all about it very quickly. My lessons are about finding these moments and working with them.
