About Emily

Teaching saxophone is about nurturing both technical skill and personal expression, and my philosophy reflects this dual focus. I emphasize a strong technical foundation including breath control, embouchure formation, posture, finger agility, and rhythm accuracy to promote healthy and effective playing. Tone development is paramount; I guide students through articulation, phrasing, vibrato, and dynamics to help them craft a compelling, individual sound. Music theory and ear training are introduced in the context of repertoire and improvisation, supporting musical understanding and creativity. Improvisation is a vital part of my teaching; I introduce it early and develop it progressively, encouraging students to explore melodic and rhythmic ideas with confidence. I customize lessons to align with each student’s interests and goals, whether in jazz, blues, pop, or classical music. I incorporate technology such as recording tools, slow-down software, and backing tracks to make practice engaging and effective. One of my proudest moments was helping a student transition from relying heavily on sheet music to improvising with fluency and musicality in performance. My goal is to foster a supportive, inspiring learning space where students thrive technically and artistically, building a lifelong love for the saxophone.

Teaching saxophone to me means fostering both the rigorous development of technique and the joyful exploration of musical expression. I emphasize core skills such as breath control, embouchure formation, articulation precision, finger dexterity, and tone development to ensure a solid foundation that supports all genres.

I introduce music theory, ear training, and jazz harmony early to equip students with the language and tools for improvisation and ensemble playing. Lessons are highly personalized to align with students’ unique interests—whether that includes dissecting bebop solos, learning blues phrasing, or jamming along with contemporary R&B grooves.

Improvisation is at the heart of my approach, broken down into practical steps like scale application, melodic phrasing, rhythmic variation, and dynamic shaping to build confidence and originality. I incorporate technology such as recording software, slow-downer apps, and looping devices to deepen practice and self-assessment. Performance preparation is woven into lessons, focusing on stage presence, emotional connection, and managing performance anxiety.

I cultivate a nurturing, inspiring environment where students are encouraged to experiment, make mistakes, and develop their own musical voice. One of the most rewarding teaching experiences was helping a student transition from reliance on sheet music to becoming a confident improviser and bandleader. My overarching goal is to inspire students to embrace the saxophone as a tool for authentic, expressive storytelling through music.
