About Rick

I am proud to say that I have taught and worked with students in a variety of school settings for better than three decades and would do it all again if given the opportunity. I still have students who I am in contact with living in other parts of Canada who I hear from regularly.
Early in my career I was chosen to teach for a two week period at the Terry Fox Centre (now called Encounters Canada), in Ottawa.
As well I was fortunate in 2003 to attend the Teachers Institute for Parliamentary Democracy in Ottawa for a week where I was actively involved in sessions of parliament along with other educators from across Canada. While there we attended a Supreme Court Trial, a session of the Senate, the Canadian news headquarters and the Parliamentary Library to name a few.
I supervised student visits to both Europe as well as Japan during my lengthy career and coached both girls and boys basketball for many years.
I love getting my students actvely invloved in citizenship activities such as planning and running political debates, and running school elections that coincide with federal, provincial and municipal election dates.
Lastly I was nominated by one of my students for the Governor General's Award for the teaching of Canadian History and spent a week in Ottawa spending time with Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and her husband.
I love teaching, I love getting my students involved in their learning and I have made many excellent life long friends throughout my teaching career.

About the lesson

I value variety in both my teaching approach as well as the techniques I use recognizing that my students have their own unique learning styles requiring a broad range of opportunities for them to connect to the content of the lessons and units they are studying.
My lesson plans follow a basic format with an introduction (motivator, to help students gain an interest as well as an over-all understanding of the lesson they are about to participate in), body (activities to achieve the objectives and meet the outcomes), lastly closure (summary of the purpose of the content and its connection to the learning outcomes).
I have a lot to offer my students with my vast experience in middle school, high school and as a sessional instructor/supervisor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Lethbridge. As a result of these various experiences I value and include in my teaching lessons that are age relevant and that include maturation consideration as well as variety that appeals to different l;earning styles.
