About Paco
I have taught writing and communication for more than a decade. The majority of my experience comes from working with students applying to college and in creating and editing English textbooks for Spanish speaking students when I lived in Santiago, Chile.
I have experience teaching, editing textbooks, and prepping students to take the TOEFL and SAT exams. Students today are more distracted than ever, and their writing is suffering because of it. Writing can seem daunting to many of them, but there are very simple and consistent building blocks to write effectively and declaratively.
It's not about style; its about communicating clearly. With my students, I focus on their specific needs to build the foundation of a strong piece: the outline, the expanded outline, the first draft, the rewrite.
Our digital world is allowing these muscles to atrophy in our students, and all they need is a little exercise.

I take a student-centered, interactive approach to teaching, focusing on building both the skills and confidence needed to succeed in essay writing. My method incorporates:
Active learning:
Engaging students through discussion, brainstorming, and interactive exercises to explore key concepts.
Scaffolded learning:
Gradually increasing the complexity of tasks, from outlining to drafting to revising, ensuring students understand each step of the writing process.
Focused feedback:
Providing specific, constructive feedback on areas such as thesis development, argument structure, coherence, and grammar, with a focus on improvement.
Critical thinking development:
Encouraging students to think critically about sources, evidence, and their own writing choices to strengthen their arguments and deepen their analysis.
Writing templates and strategies:
Offering students clear frameworks (e.g., introduction-body-conclusion, topic sentence support, etc.) and strategies for approaching different types of essays (e.g., argumentative, analytical, reflective).
