About James
I am a second-year MSci Theoretical Physics student at the University of Bristol, with A-levels in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Chemistry. I received Gold awards in the Chemistry Olympiad and Cambridge Chemistry Challenge, as well as Bronze III in the Physics Olympiad.
During my A-levels, I regularly helped classmates understand difficult scientific and mathematical concepts. This taught me how important patience, clear communication and encouragement are when somebody lacks confidence in a subject. I am friendly and approachable, and I want students to feel comfortable asking questions without worrying about making mistakes.
Outside my studies, I have completed my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, captained my squash team and play both the piano and pipe organ. These interests have helped me develop discipline, resilience and the ability to work consistently towards long-term goals.

My lessons are aimed primarily at GCSE and A-level students studying Maths, Further Maths or Physics. I begin by identifying the topics the student finds most difficult and checking their existing understanding. From there, I break problems into clear, manageable steps, explain the reasoning behind each method and use worked examples before allowing the student to attempt similar questions independently.
A typical lesson includes a short review of previous material, an explanation of the main topic, guided practice and exam-style questions. I encourage students to explain their thinking aloud, as this helps me identify misunderstandings and build their confidence.
Having once struggled with maths myself before progressing to study Theoretical Physics at university, I understand how discouraging difficult concepts can feel. I am patient, approachable and willing to explain an idea in several different ways until it makes sense. My aim is not simply to provide answers, but to help students become confident and independent problem-solvers.
