About Rachael
I am a freelance writer, tutor, and proofreader who gained a first-class hons. BA in English Literature with German from The University of Exeter (2020). I went on to receive a distinction for my MA in Poetry at The Poetry School in 2025.
While at The University of Exeter, I studied modules in Medieval Literature, Renaissance Drama, The Evolution of the Novel, Romanticism, Prosody, and Creative Writing. My final dissertation received a first.
Having worked as a language assistant at a residential school prior to studying, I began tutoring privately in 2018.
I now hold 8 years of experience in private tuition and offer expert knowledge in preparing students for English exams with AQA, Edexcel, Eduqas, OCR, GL, CEM, IBES, and Cambridge IGCSE. As a result, I can provide an exciting catalogue of online resources tailored to individual learning needs.
I am an empathetic and observant tutor, able to provide a safe space for students to gain confidence in their studies, refining skills such as unseen poetry analysis and essay structuring, which are frequently undertaught in schools.

What can you expect from my tutorials?
I aim for an exploratory tutorial that balances exam technique (if applicable) with a more creative discussion of literary concepts, cultural context, and interpretation of themes.
My teaching style is influenced by historicist theory. This means I encourage students to delve into the cultural/historical context of their studied work. This brings the text to life and allows the student to fully understand its place in the world. We might discuss the relationship between Elizabethan music and Shakespeare's Twelfth Night, or consider the experiments of Luigi Galvani alongside our reading of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. This historicist approach has resulted in some really exciting essays from previous pupils, which have stood out of the crowd.
Where appropriate, I will also set independent research and essay tasks as homework. This helps me monitor progress.
What qualifications do I hold?
- Enhanced DBS Check (2026)
- (Distinction) MA in Writing Poetry, The Poetry School (2025)
- (First-Class Hons) BA in English Literature with Proficiency in German, the University of Exeter (2020)

Really helped me with my GCSE English Lit, from a 7 to an 8 within a couple lessons. The lessons were interactive and conversational, so much so that they are enjoyable.
I have been taught by Rachel through My Tutor and she’s helped me get from grades 5 in both gcse english literature and language to a grade 7 and 8. She helped me target the spots I was most weak at and helped me improve on these areas.
