About Nakia
My Teaching Philosophy & Approach I believe language learning and creative expression flourish through meaningful conversation and personal connection. My focus is on building confidence and clear communication over rigid grammar perfection. Rather than drilling rules, we explore language as a living tool for authentic self-expression and connection with others. My approach is deeply flexible, adapting to your individual needs, interests, and learning style. Whether you're a visual learner who benefits from journaling exercises, an auditory learner who thrives in discussion, or a kinesthetic learner who needs movement and interaction, we'll find the methods that work best for you.

What Makes Me Different I bring a unique blend of practical teaching experience and philosophical depth to our sessions. With direct experience in creative writing instruction and medical professionals’ communication, plus immersive living experience across diverse cultural and social contexts including corporate environments, military settings, and spiritual communities. I understand how communication adapts across different worlds. What truly sets me apart is my focus on the personal and transpersonal relationship we have with language and storytelling. I incorporate archetypal and mythic frameworks into creative work, stress management techniques for anxious learners, and I prioritize the expansion of minds over the memorization of rules. Students often describe me as inspiring them to think differently, as "thought expander" who approaches learning with genuine kindness and curiosity. A Typical Session With Me Our 45-50 minute sessions begin with checking in about your goals and current needs. For conversational ESL, we dive into topics that genuinely interest you—your passions, experiences, or current events that spark curiosity. For creative writing, we explore your preferred genres and use journaling as a springboard for idea generation and authentic expression. I'm particularly drawn to creative essays and non-fiction, and I find archetypal storytelling incredibly valuable for personal narrative work. We typically close our time together by summarizing insights and planning next steps, ensuring you leave with clear direction for continued growth. Who I Work Best With ESL: Intermediate to advanced English speakers with solid sentence structure and proficient vocabulary Creative Writing: First-time writers, experienced authors, and published writers seeking stronger connection to their intuitive voice Ages: Adults and teens 16+, especially international students Perfect Fit If You: Have hit a plateau and want help leveling up Prioritize authentic communication over formal rule-following Are open-minded and interested in personal growth Enjoy challenging, thought-provoking conversations Are curious about deeper topics and new perspectives Want to work on confidence, overcome writer's block, or reignite creativity Goals I Love Supporting: Personal expression and creative projects Conversational fluency and confidence building Citizenship/immigration and university exam prep Intellectual exploration and creative breakthrough moments What to Expect I work well with both drop-in sessions and short-term regular commitments (3-6 months). While I'll suggest practice between sessions, the value you find in that work is ultimately up to you. You can keep our conversations surface-level if preferred, but the most transformative work happens when students are curious about exploring deeper topics. Be prepared to spend time outside our classes developing your skills—growth happens in the practice between our meetings. Most importantly, come ready to expand your mind and discover new ways of thinking about language, storytelling, and your own unique voice. Note: I'm not ideal for complete English beginners or students seeking primarily grammar drills and formal language rules. My strength lies in helping communicators who want to connect authentically and express themselves powerfully.
