About Lauren Skylar

Outside of tutoring, I work in a neuroscience lab as a research assistant, and I am also a graduate student studying counseling psychology. My background includes special education teaching and mental health counseling, which give me additional skills to properly set healthy goals for your student. As a lifelong student myself, my relationship with learning hasn't always been positive, but I have developed many skills to overcome instances of boredom, dejection, and hopelessness that many other students feel! I hope to embrace a holistic approach to academic tutoring for your student.

About the lesson

Hi, I'm Lauren! I'm a UCLA graduate with a degree in Psychobiology and a minor in Neuroscience. I graduated in Spring 2024, which gives me insight into the current landscape of academia! I currently work full-time as a Research Assistant while studying Counseling Psychology in a Master's program at Santa Clara University.

As I graduated from high school in 2020, I am uniquely qualified and sympathetic to current high school students. In high school, I achieved high marks in classes like AP Spanish, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus AB, AP Biology, AP Literature, and AP US History. I personally found that hard work, study habits, and the ability to ask for help were the real keys to success. These methods also apply to standardized testing (SAT/ACT) and college applications. Through my 3 attempts at taking this test, I developed strategies to improve my score to the 99th percentile that I now share with my students!

In regard to college applications, I have assisted many students with essay editing and application building. I personally was admitted to several selective schools including but not limited to UCLA, UW, UIUC, USC, and Boston University. I am very familiar with the Common Application and UC application.

My goal is to help students in any way I can! In my experience, lack of knowledge and ability is hardly ever the cause of poor grades or test scores. Teaching style, environment, stress, and lack of resources often are the keystone. My job is to find those areas of improvement and guide them as an advisor and mentor. I look forward to a conversation with both parents and students to develop a cohesive plan to help your student!
