I first met Moira-Clare in 2019, when she was my landlady. We became fast friends almost immediately, and lived through the COVID lockdowns together. In the years since, she has become one of my dearest friends and an immensely integral part of my life.

We are an unlikely pair — I’m a young man in my thirties, and Moira-Clare is in her seventies — but we have such fun together. She is very much like another grandmother in my life. My partner, Antonia, has affectionately referred to her as “the other girlfriend.” We have travelled together on tramps around New Zealand and even to Italy, where Moira-Clare is learning Italian — something I find amazingly inspiring for someone in their seventies.

More broadly, Moira-Clare is the most inspiring model of ageing well that I know. I have such joy spending time with her, because she is immensely funny, deeply kind, and profoundly wise. She is the sort of person I hope everybody has in their life — someone who teaches you about the big stuff. The things that actually matter: how to have good relationships, how to live with integrity, how to find meaning.

She and I work out in the gym every week with our good friend and trainer JJ. We write poetry together. We have a lot of fun. Moira-Clare’s energy, curiosity, and warmth are genuinely remarkable.
