About Sofia

I'm deeply devoted to enabling all students to feel empowered and genuinely invested in their own capacities for growth, knowledge, and creativity. Inclusivity and accessibility are key to my approach to anything—as a queer neurodivergent person in academia, I'm well-versed in the difficulties and nuances of navigating the educational experience in its different limitations and often-ableist norms. I graduated summa cum laude, with Honors, from UPenn in 2023 with a double major in English and Gender/Sexuality Studies.

In both high school and during my time as an undergrad, I've worked as an editor for numerous literary publications and have been awarded for my scholarly and creative work. I've completed 2 honors theses and thus am particularly experienced in academic research, especially with unusual or niche topics; the synthesis of seemingly unrelated fields or subjects is one of my favorite types of work. My work has also been featured in publications such as the Los Angeles Times, the Sonora Review, Waxwing, and many others. I like to share my own college admissions experiences with my students when developing their own personal statements, and to find common ground.

My approach to tutoring is inclusive, adaptive, and dynamic. Each student has their own areas of strength and those they'd like to develop and refine further, and everyone brings their own unique learning styles and interests to our sessions. As a neurodivergent person myself, I have firsthand knowledge of how limited or normative our education systems can feel, and I always want to orient my tutoring around the needs and feelings of my students, first and foremost. I am a big fan of associative knowledge and creative, humanities-oriented approaches to learning.

I've undergone numerous rounds of college applications, and am about to begin grad school. I'm well-versed in and extensively experienced with helping students hone in and distill their own inimitable voice when producing their college application essays, rather than merely reproducing predictable and overused essay structures. I have won numerous awards for my academic and creative work, and completed 2 honors theses for my 2 majors, which both separately won awards. Most notably, I'm invested in interdisciplinary engagement and want to help students make connections across different subjects and their areas of interest. I love literature and poetry, and I'm devoted to making it not only accessible but exciting to everyone.

My lessons are ideal for high school students, and especially anyone applying to college or preparing to do so. I am also a highly experienced tutor for undergrad-level English and essay development. I can also work with middle schoolers.
