Details

My first free lesson is a chat to discuss what you need to learn in English and how you want to learn it. It will also help me assess your level and give you some feedback. It gives you the opportunity to ask me questions too. The length of time it takes depends on how much we have to discuss - usually anywhere between 20 and 30 minutes.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I'm a native British English speaker. I learnt French and German at school but forgot nearly everything because I didn't use them. I later decided to go to evening classes to try and learn French again and I was inspired by my French teacher to become an English teacher!
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

The great thing about English is that it embraces many different cultures and varieties of English. Therefore, I don't believe that there is just one character who embodies the language's culture as there is not just one culture. Having said that, I am very fond of Jane Austen who was a great writer, full of wit, irony and satire (like me!)
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

English is very rich in vocabulary from other languages. It is also rich in phrasal verbs and idioms which are the bane of the English language learner. I think this adds to the flavour and eccentricity of the language and often leads to humour, which is very important in learning.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

I'm a native speaker and live in the UK. I wish I had the time to take up learning French again as I think it is important to be able to speak more than one language.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

Most of my students find it relatively easy to get started in English but for some it becomes more difficult at around intermediate level. This is when it requires more analysis and understanding of the structures of the language to be able to develop further. Students also need to develop strategies to 'notice' how expert speakers of English use the language and be able to compare that with their own use.

In addition, some students who have managed to pick up the language by living in the UK for some time may find writing in English difficult, particularly if they don't have any need to write on a regular basis. Learning to write in English can be similar to learning another language, quite apart from speaking it.

On a more specific level, everyone has problems with the present perfect! Don't get me started...
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

When I was learning French again at evening classes in an adult education college (where I have since worked for the last 23 years), my French teacher told us to "think in French". The penny dropped and I realised that I could not rely on trying to translate directly from one language to the other - I needed to ask myself: "How would a French person say this?" Of course, I now say to my students: "Think in English". Easier said than done, I know...
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Some years after I left school and had forgotten all the French I had learnt, I went to Paris with a friend. We visited Versailles and got caught in a downpour. A very elegant French gentleman held his enormous umbrella over us until we got inside. I tried desperately to say "Thank you very much" in French but realised that my pronunciation was atrocious! I resolved then to try and re-learn French when I had the opportunity.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

I listen! I also ask questions to try to understand what students need and want to learn and in what situations they need to use English. I find out how they wish to learn, too, as everyone has different ways of doing things. I then find appropriate ways and materials for students to achieve their goals and, most importantly, help them build up their confidence in using the language.
