About Mary Louise

I'm a writer, storyteller, and educator who has spent more than 20 years working with young people, and I still believe there's nothing more exciting than watching a child realize they have something worth saying.

My background is in theater, English, and storytelling. I founded and ran a learner-driven microschool on Florida's Emerald Coast, and spent more than six years in the Acton Academy network as a Founding Guide, Lead Guide, and school operator. Along the way, I co-created Junior Emerald Coast Storytellers, a program where young people wrote and performed their own stories, and helped launch a Children's Business Fair where kids brought their ideas to life in front of real audiences.

As a writer and memoirist, I know firsthand how vulnerable and powerful it can be to put your words out into the world. I bring that understanding to every lesson, creating a space where students feel safe to try, take risks, and grow.

I'm now home in the Texas Hill Country, and I'm excited to work with families here and online.

About the lesson

Through my lessons, students grow into confident, capable communicators while discovering the joy of language and their own unique voice.

I offer personalized instruction in English, creative writing, poetry, public speaking, grammar, composition, and handwriting. Lessons can support schoolwork and academic goals, or become a creative space for students who want to write, speak, imagine, and express themselves more freely.

I’m a writer and storyteller with a background in theatre and English, and I’ve spent more than 20 years working with young people. I’ve founded a learner-driven school and a youth storytelling program, and I bring that same curiosity, creativity, and learner-centered approach to tutoring.

I meet each student where they are and build from their interests, strengths, and goals. My lessons are encouraging, thoughtful, and engaging rather than worksheet-heavy.

Depending on the student, we might write a story or poem, strengthen an essay, practice a presentation, explore a piece of literature, develop vocabulary and grammar, work on handwriting, or find a more confident way to communicate an idea.

I believe good teaching is not just about getting the right answer. It’s about helping a young person think deeply, communicate clearly, and discover that they have something worth saying.

I teach students ages 8–18, both online and in person in the Dripping Springs area and surrounding communities.
